asbestos in basement?

My workplace is in the basement of an old building in New York (it is the backstock area of a retail store). Recently, I noticed that some of the beams have this fluffy grey coating on them. Nothing is undergoing construction, but there are cracks and pieces falling apart here and there. I've become worried that the grey coating could be asbestos that's being released in the cracks. Should I be concerned?
