It's called rug brick; the clay was scratched with steel points before being baked.

It was popular in our area in the 1940s and I haven't seen it on homes built since then.

Worthy, thank you soooo much for chiming in with that information! The house was built around 1967/1968
With your information, I was able to go on line and find the info on the rug brick. When I called a local brick company they hadn't heard about "rug brick" but when I described it to the lady she told me they called it Vertex or Ver Tex, and it's a smooth and scratched brick.
