Cedar siding shingles in Seattle - what clear finish to use?

Posted by PurplethumbedLes (My Page) on

I just had some unfinished white cedar siding shingles added to the front gable of my Seattle house. My contractor kindly left his scaffolding behind for a few days so that I could apply a wood finish. This Friday is the day to do it.

I was originally planning to put up a tinted, semi-transparent stain but am really liking the appearance of the blonde natural wood. I'm stumped as to what to use in Seattle's marine climate that will preserve the shingles and prevent mildew/algae. What brands of clear finishes do YOU like and why?

Cabot Clear Solution, but be careful. It's not clear. Available in 3+ colors. Good for it's trans-oxide pigments and old linseed oil based roots, they being a Mass. company. Don't know what to say about the mildew, here in the east it's a fact of life.
