tinting shellac

Hi,
I'm finishing a new bookcase made of clear (select) pine and douglas fir back-board and door panels.
To control blotching, I put down a very diluted (with alcohol) coat of shellac on my test pieces. I then put on Varathane mahogany stain. It looks terrible! It worked ok on the fir, but the pine just looks a blotchy mess - the grain is almost entirely obscured. Am I doing it wrong?
Thanks
