Door knob back plate. Where to find a match.

Posted by burningmustard (My Page) on

Anyone know where I can get some back plates that look like this online? Or do I just need to keep checking all the salvage stores in town and ebay? From a 1935 colonial. I need about 8.

Thanks!

You can always use different styles in different rooms.

The only time it sometimes looks strange is if they do not match in a single room.

I have seen numerous places that have different plates on each side of doors.

Each room matches, but not both sides of doors.

I don't know, I've not seen that kind in all my hardware shopping... but it is really cool! I'd keep looking!

I have come across one before at a salvage store here in KC.

I have a downstairs hallway that has a bathroom, mudroom and a cased entry to an office. The bathroom and mudroom have different style, but very nice door hardware.

I am putting up french doors going into the office, and before I spend hundreds more on hardware to match the mudroom/bathroom I am thinking about switching over everything to the original style shown above.

Oh well, I guess I hit all the stores this weekend and see what I can come up with.

Good luck!

You might be able to get away with a simple round backplate on some. It won't look like a mismatch, just like those doors were less special.

You could always hang portieres rather than put in french doors--modern ones are usually the wrong proportions to look right.

At the risk of sounding "whatever" here, have you looked inside your closet doors? My 1937 colonial has the same hardware inside the closets as it does on the outside. I "stole" some of the hardware to re-do my new closet doors and just left the insides of the closets blank. If I happen upon the right ones someday, I'll just pop them in, otherwise who's gonna know but me?

Yes, I have thought about the idea of stealing some from inside the closet/basement doors, and i may go that route.

Was hoping to find some, but like you said, I could always replace those in the closets as I find them. Good idea. Will have to check the inventory, as I know some of the closet have weird dummy knobs and plates.

Thanks!

Have you checked historichouseparts.com ? Take a look here: http://historichouseparts.com/antique_door_plates.html , and send them a picture. Maybe they can find something for you.

Also check Renovator's Supply (rensup.com)-- they have one that is similar, although not exactly the same.

Here is a link that might be useful: back plate
