if you need to go anywhere. It's in the middle of nowhere. That's why it's so cheap. I bet the new owner will have to drop a half mil to update it.

When I was a grad student I lived on Long Island's Gold Coast in a mansion that had fallen into shall we say, "lesser hands". Though its municipal address was the "-- Estate" it survived a tax sale only because they rented out rooms to students. (And spied on them with cameras through peepholes. But that's another story.) The third floor of the home, which I snuck into one evening, was a maze of bedrooms and baths for long-gone servants and had been abandoned since the Depression. The rest of the mansion didn't look much better. The elaborate wrought iron rails were rust held together by paint. The marble floors, dull and dingy. Maybe this one is better.

It is about a mile down the mountain from where I live now, so I am used to the middle of nowhere! (Telecommuting has its upside)

Actually, this one is in pretty good shape and the grounds are kept impeccably. In this area 3.8 million is high for any property. There is another lake front older 2 story 1/4 mile down the road that is reasonable at $250,000. I too think they will be dropping the price, but it will not be because the house/property is in bad shape. The Chauffer Quarters are actually a really nice house that has some type of bark siding on it.

I just "drove" down 247. Not a bad summer getaway, I suppose, for a NY banker/broker. No further than the Hamptons. But no cachet. And only 6.5 baths in 12,000 sf.!
