Getting Ready For Winter?

I live in Minnesota and went out riding on Sunday. The air temp was 52 degrees. I think it is getting to be time to put it away for the season. Anyone else still holding out for a warm day or two (that lives in the cold like I do)?

I live in Michigan and usually have my bike put away by November 1st. I went on a short ride this past Sunday, as well.

I'm probably going to winterize my bike this weekend.

That should be a sign for all of you that 80 degree temps are on the way.

I moved back to SW Florida about a year ago, so I ride all year...please don't hate me...LOL

However....I lived for a few years in SE PA...I still rode in the winter...the cut-off temp for me was around 37 or so....I just layered, beginning with silk long johns, for warmth.
Of course...even if it was warmer, I never rode after a snow...it's way too risky...ya never know what road conditions lie around the bend, so-to-speak.
It only takes one small patch of asphalt that hasn't been exposed to sun to create a catastrophe.

Hi pirate girl! I frequent the Hoya forum quite often. I purchased a lot of my Hoyas from EBay... But purchased two supposed EA lacunosas from big box retailers that look completely different from each other. I received an ID from the Hoya forum of my dark green as Ruby Sue and the lighter I was just guessing as Tove. You know how spotty their labeling can be. The Aeoniums that have the larger more sporadic looking leaves were labeled as "Voodoo" and listed two parent plants with Schwarzkopf being one of them. The other more bushy aeonium was purchased from an eBay seller in San Diego calling it Blushing Beauty... Not sure on that one. I have tried to be very precautious with the Hindu Rope as well as all of the clearance bin babies. Most I have systemically sprayed with a Neem/Soap/Alcohol mix I found in the Hoya forum. Admittedly, it is a pain in the rear!!! And I'm sure the Echeveria will only be tolerant of sprays if they are few and far between. The Aeoniums don't seem to mind at all. I realize it's a gamble, but they just won't make it outside in a N TX winter. I'm crossing my fingers!!! Anyhow, thank you for the advice and info. And thank you, thank you to Kathi and Hoovb! ~Sara

Thanks hosta gardeners. From your suggestions, and my own ideas, I have compiled a to do list. Winter prep for hosta gardens 1. Take pictures of hosta gardens for reference and winter planning. 2. Cut back hosta to about 6-8 inches. Leaving that much to catch leaves and snow to act as a winter mulch. Otherwise, I donÃ¯Â¿Â½t give winter protection to my hosta. 3. Mark hosta crowns with stakes. My husband, I notice, has a pile of wooden garden stakes he made, probably from scrap. I am going to use them this year as my plant labels arenÃ¯Â¿Â½t ready, (winter project?) 2. Store container hosta for winter. Some I will sink into my vegetable patch as I did last two winters, and some I will use the hosta forum tip method (I decided to name it such without permission and apologize to any forum members who disagree): store sideways and the north side of my house under the eaves so they will stay frozen and dry all winter. 3. Take notes. From what needs to be moved next spring to where I think I could squeeze in a few more hosta. Also which annuals worked best as hosta companions. Many of my hosta are still immature and I like to fill with annuals and groundcovers. 4. Water thouroughly one last time. It has been dry and windy here and the soil doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t freeze until late November or December. We have had it better than some, but have had to water. If it doesnÃ¯Â¿Â½t rain this week, I will water one last time. After October 15th, no more. 5. Make a large pot of chili, buy some Spanish red wine, make a fire and enjoy the last of the garden,. Well, I put Wheee to bed for the winter. She was ready, believe me. Minuteman is in bed, too. Over half of my hosta garden is in bed right now. I still have Luna Moth, El Nino and Orange Marmalade still going strong and no signs of sleepiness yet! I think it's because Hallsons is up north and El Nino and Luna Moth are used to this weather so they are not phased by it?

I've been working towards Fall for weeks now. It's too big a job to put it all off to the last minute. Tomato plants have been coming out as they deteriorate. They go to the landfill. Pepper plants this year didn't produce...too wet?...so they've been pulled too except for the one huge Asian pepper plant. Watermelon vines (essentially dead now) need to find their way to the trash. Isn't it true that they shouldn't be composted? I'm still picking green beans (2nd planting) and I've been getting potatoes from my Fall crop for several weeks. In the middle of my vegetable garden I have about 35 amaryllis bulbs. I have started the process of digging them for winter storage. Quite a process for me partially because I keep a label with each individual bulb to document bloom history and color. They get dug, dried in the shed for a few weeks, and then cut off the (drying) leaves and pack for storage in the basement. Each time I move the bulb, the label has to move with it. Once the beans give up or we get a frost (whichever comes first) I'll dig the potatoes, pull the beans, and whatever else is still in the garden and break out the rototiller. For the first time ever, I think I'll plant a cover crop. Bought some annual rye grass seed for this purpose. Anything to watch out for when doing this?

Oh yeah...I forgot all about the leaves!

Our big riding day when we lived up North was New Year's Day...it became a tradition for us...wouldn't go far in the freezing cold, tho...LOL

When we lived in NH we always had our traditional Christmas Day Ride, even if it was just down to the next driveway. Now we live in FL and have the please of riding all year. I'm still wearing shorts and sandals LOL I just hate the thought of putting on "winter clothes".

I see that your post is from last year. I rode my TGB 50cc all last winter here in MN with no problems. At least within Minneapolis, there is so much salt on the streets that they are dry all winter.

I just recommend a really good down jacket. The Sub Zero or Absolute Zero are both good options. A balaclava is good and nice thick boots and socks are good too.
