Safety Gear

I did not realize how important safety gear is until reading some of the post in this forum, which is not easy to find, by the way.

I wear the leathers until it gets so hot I can't stand it any longer. I will be looking for safety gear to wear in the warmer months as the leathers are just too hot.

My DH doesn't wear the leather jacket in the warmer months and now I'll have to convince him to "Dress for the Crash and not for the Ride."

We are suppose to do Deals Gap soon, but now I'm reconsidering riding, we don't have the pants with the kneepads.

I know DH will ride anyway, and will wear his leathers, but its scary, none the less.

Don't reconsider riding the dragon! That is an awesome road and as long as you keep your eyes open and ride conservatively you will do just fine. Probably better as a passenger than the driver. As the driver you really, really have to keep your eyes on the road. Here is a good link for some fantastic shots. I don't know how to put a pic in here but I'll try.

Great progress Robin, it's wonderful that you and Ed can do this yourself. Boy the stuff one finds when one starts a remodel. It bogles the mind that folks will cover stuff up rather than do it right. Yesterday morning I got the call from H#!! about our house. I had Steve tear out some new plywood flooring in the sitting room because when I pulled the carpet out, there was a dark spot indicating a water stain. He called and said there was a rotten sill and he was replacing it. I've learned that with this place if it has anything new the previous owners put in that it is covering something up. We closed on our house yesterday, we no longer own a lakehouse. I look for the place to be flooded with people by the weekend. That's always the way it is when you sell a house and then have to rent it for awhile til you can move. They will be here cutting trees and measuring windows and floors and driving me crazy. Lucky you, Robin you moved into your house right away. I can't wait to see the pictures of your new bath. Good idea letting little feller help out.

Ok, good subject here. I'm home from work due to a medical condition which doesnt allow me to drive. Meantime, my roof needs re-shingling per my home insurance. Yep, you guessed it , I staged the roof and stripped it with the help of my SIL, just like I did 25 yrs ago. Except I've gotten a little creaky. And man do I ache and cramp. The lesson has been driven home. Ive got blow downs all around me from Irene and other storms . This is where I get my wood, harvesting blow downs. I use the term blow down, instead of another name, widow maker. I've been learning as I go, the craft of cutting up a leaner without getting clobbered. I use muffs, but I wear glasses, my regulars, to see. Goggles steam up and impair vision . But a mesh mask like a fencer's. That is worth considering. Next comes kevlar. Thanks for something to Google up info on.

clg, I'm sorry--I meant a random orbit sander. We have one that is one of my best remodeling friends :) I used some 60 paper on it to sand down thinset bit by bit to get to the wires. You'll want to have a shopvac handy, the windows open, and to wash your hair after you're done, unless you like the statuary coiffure look :) (kind of fun to play with before you shower, though :)) weedyacres, I had *planned* to remove the grout with a dremel, but there were some coping saw blades lying around and I picked one up to do something else and found myself using them on the grout, just fine. The tiles are 8.5x17, so I had 17" groutlines to slice away into. Then I cut canals in the tile with a 4.5" angle grinder, another one of my remodeling best friends (although I have a love/hate relationship with it at this point). Not all the way through, just most of the way down. When I whacked the tile with the hammer, the tile (very hard throughbody porcelain) just cracked up, not necessarily along the canals specifically, but much more than it had pre-canal. YOu really want to make sure you do the groutlines before you whack, though, so the impact doesn't transfer over to any neighboring tiles you want to keep in.

Hi Zephergal, I rode on the back of DH's bike for years with no interest in having my own bike. Then out of the blue, I started to think "Maybe I could do this myself" I took the MSF course and I was scared to death. The instructors were great, The bikes were sweet little 250 Yamahas but I had NEVER run a throttle in my life. Somehow I passed and got my own Yahamah 250. It took me a long time untill I wasn't spooked everytime I rode. But a year after I wobbled through the course I've stepped up to a Kawasaki 500. Hoo-wee! this is starting to be fun! I second all the good advice on safety gear. Look through your turns, the bike will go where you look. And believe that no one else on the road can see you. Every motorist that has ever been in an accident with a motorcycle will always say the same thing, "I didn't see him." I would recomend that you take the first available MSF course, find a bike that you can sit on flat footed, and then go ride! Have fun and be safe.

Hilltop,

I use FirstGear HT Air Overpants winter and summer, along with boots that cover my ankles, a full face helmet and various gloves. In cooler weather I use a leather jacket and Gerbings jacket liner, in warmer weather a FirstGear mesh jacket.

I'm just back from a 3,000 mile trip to Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. I don't ride down to the corner without gear.

My son learned the hard way about the importance of protective gear. He didn't think the gear looked very cool. One afternoon as I worked in the kitchen I heard him going through the gears as he ripped up and down the old air strip behind our house. Suddenly there was no sound . I froze minutes later a man came to my door and said 'Did you have a son named Richard?'. I raced around the section and found my son laying on the ground . Both of his arms looked like noodles. He had a compound fracture of his jaw and half of his teeth were scattered on the ground around him . The man who came to my house to break the news just happened to be driving by and saw the accident ,otherwise I am sure my son would be dead today.
My son spent the next few months with casts on both arms and his jaws wired shut. Today he does not have full range of motion to one wrist, his face is scared and many of his beautiful teeth which had never had as much a cavity are gone. He was lucky, he is alive . The surgeon told me my son's injuries were mild compared to some he had seen . Today Richard wears protective gear when he rides.
