Copper bar top

I'm planning to use copper sheeting to finish my basement bar top. My question is should I patina the copper prior to adhering to the current laminate or can I color after. For context, the bar is from an coffee shop so it will need to be re-stained so I'm not necessarily concerned of drips or other issues.

I think you could patina after it is adhered to the laminate. The only issue is water... will water damage the substrate material?
