Hi, I'm pricing a custom staircase containing treads with punched metal inset into wooden "trays". Not sure of the spec of the metal, but I am thinking steel 1/8" thick with a custom pattern punched into it. Any idea about how much this sort of thing costs? I've looked at various metalworking websites, but I cannot get a ballpark idea of price from them .

I have searched for small quantities of perforated plate with no luck. There are shops that can laser cut any pattern you can design into plate. As a much less expensive alternative, you could do something nice with spaced brass or stainless bar stock, both of which are readily available.
