Comparative warping of steel and cast iron under heat

I need to replace the 1/4" thick cast iron smoke shelf on my old cast iron stove.
It is exposed directly to the flames.
It is difficult to get a replacement casting.
I want to replace it with a piece of 3/8" thick piece of steel.
Will the thicker steel resist to warping under the heat as well as the thinner cast iron?

| What are the shelf dimensions? That will help determine if the steel will work. Cast iron is more dimensionally stable than steel so will tend to warp less. It is also more stable under repeated heating/cooling cycles. If you use steel, it may be more difficult in the long run. Consult a local welder or machine shop - they should be able to tell you if it will work for you. |

| 12"x14" is the dimensions. I have given the pattern to a welder to cut. I'll give it a try anyway because of the price difference. The welder says it should work. Thank for your interest. Thierry |
