removing rust from metal

| I have some antique metal grates and want to clean them to be replated or painted. They have some surface tarnish and rust. It is magnetic, but appears to have copper plate on top. The base is either brass or iron I'm guessing based on the weight.
Since they are 3D with an intricate pattern, something I could soak it in would be ideal. Any suggestions are welcome. |

Magnets do not stick to brass. Naval jelly wil clean the metal up for further finishing. You can easily make a large trough with some thick plastic sheeting and a few pieces of 2x lumber to create a raised edge. Do the work outside in a place that does not have a lot of grass. |
