Silverware crafting question

Posted by silvernest (My Page) on

I'm planning some artwork which involves joining pieces of silverplate flatware. I need the welds/solders/joins to be sturdy and permanent. I don't have the experience or tools for heavy duty welding, and don't have the money to send it out. Can anyone recommend a jewellery or craft minded solution? Will soldering work? I have a torch, can buy whatever medium and/or glues necessary.

Also, any tips heating up silverplate? I'm told the fumes can be bad, and to wear a respirator. I haven't tried anything yet, as I want to gather up information and tools and try not to do anything dangerous or stupid.

If I am gluing to acrylic, what would the best method be?

Thanks for any and all advice and information.

RE: Silverware crafting question

I mig weld stainless flatware but it discolors it quite a bit. I'd use an epoxy if I couldn't weld. I think solder wouldn't be strong enough.

good luck.
