Are those welding torches I see on e-bay any good and what does victor compatible mean.

Victor is the good stuff. It has more or less set the standard for tips, threads, and attachments.
Find out what the things are made of first (brass is what you want), and then watch out for the little 'gotchas' like flame arrestors in the lines (they prevent flash back and big bangs).

In my experience many of the cheapie torches have their own tip mounts and it is very difficult to later find replacement tips. (This is also a problem with many torches sold at sears).

If a torch is listed as "Harris" or "Victor" compatible they will have the harris or victor tip mounts and you should have no problem getting replacement tips at any welding supply house.

I always recommend buying your Oxy/Ace torch outfit at your local welding supply. You get personal service and when you are having problems, you can ask questions.

Through the years the sales people at my welding supply have given great information and assistence. If I have a regulator that needs to be sent in for service, they will loan me one until the my regulator is repaired.

In the end, you'll be money ahead.

I'm have been a welder for over forty years.I needed a new torch outfit.Soooo... I took a chance and bought one of one of those bargain sets on E bay for about $60.I could not adjust the flame(it keep poping)bad mixing chamber, and then the oxygen gage malfuntioned( keep going up and down).I sold it cheap at a flea market and went out and bought a name brand Victor (that I always used)from a welding supply.Don't waste your money on cheap equipment.Good equipment will make you money.
