Aging brass handrail

| We just had an wrought iron staircase railing installed with a brass top rail. We really don't like the shiny brass look and would like it to age to a nice patina. We had a dispute with the installer so I can't call him about it. Is there any practical way to speed up the aging process, or do we just have to wait. We live in a pretty dry area so it could take a lot of time for it to age naurally. Thanks for any suggestions. |

| First, you will want to make sure there is no seal coat on the handrail. Often a clear coating is in place to prevent the aged look. This can be removed with paint remover, or you could use a auto-paint grade sandpaper (600 grit) and sand lightly to remove it. That light sanding, if done evenly, will knock the shine down a bit right away without making it looks scratched and allow it to patina faster. |
