Rusted outdoor chairs, how to

| I was given some vintage metal lawn chairs, the kind with the scalloped or shell back, they are usually painted some bright pink or funky color. They have a layer of rust on the top, revealing more paint underneath. What method would you use to remove all of the rust to get a smooth surface to start over with new paint? Do I wire brush, power spray, apply some sortof stripping mixture? Thank you for leading me in the right direction! Karen |

| I would sand blast them. You might find someone in the yellow pages to do so for you. Or, you might get acceptable results with a wire brush mounted in a drill. It depends on how bad the rust is, and how many coats of paint you've got to deal with. Some jasco or similar paint stripper may also help. Be careful, though, depending on the age there may be lead based paint on them. You don't want to breath that dust. |
