Brass Patina

We had a shiny brass top rail installed on our wrought iron staircase railing. We really like the look of old brass that has a natural patina on it - the brass was not coated so that this could happen. The problem is that we live in a dry climate (LA) and after several months it hasn't changed much, if at all. Is there a way to hasten the process that can be done in place?

Try wiping it down with some Ammonia and leave it on. You might try a small area first. wrap with towel so it doesn't dry right away.

When I did archatectural sheetmetal and we worked on existing copper roofing we used urine diluted with a little water. I know it sounds gross and crazy but it did patina quite cuickly. IM sure the ammonia would probably work better and less disgusting than the aforementioned method. LOL
