new here, concerned

Hi ladies, I am new and have a few questions. I am 50 (YIKES!!) and just started having problems with my periods. I went to the Dr. and I just dont really know if he listened to my symptoms. Last month it started with scant shreddy dark red flow for about a week then turned into moderate to heavy bleeding for the rest of the month. The dr. immediatly wanted to do an endometrial biopsy which I begged not to have as I experienced that 2 yrs ago. He did an ultrasound which showed uterine thickening which I have had for sometime. (the reason for the biopsy 2 yrs ago.) Any way he decided to give me progesterone to stop the bleeding. I of course stopped the day I went to the Dr. so did not take the medicine. Its been a week now and the dark shreddy flow is back. I feel like I am rambling and no one will understand what I mean. If anyone can relate or help with suggestions please let me know. Thanks in advance for any advice. Rose

Hi - Please go get a second opinion. Sounds like that doc, has no idea of how to help you. I would not wait. Good luck - tina_2

Hi Rose,

Just wanted to relate with the "dark shredded flow". When I was 36, one day out of the blue I started having brownish shredded spotting, all through my cycle, and during periods (during periods, the red period's blood would be mixed with the brown shreds). It looked like pieces of skin or lining. Of course, I was worried, and went to doctors. They didn't seem to worry or have an explanation to that. I was worried about menopause, or something worse (and I didn't have kids yet, so that was another worry). It lasted for 2 years! At 38, I got pregnant, then got pregnant at 40 again. That helped me cure the dread of the brown shreds. I had no shreds since (I'm 44) so maybe that'll help you to know that it may be just a fluke.

Been doing internet research since I was scheduled for an endo-biospy. I read that during peri-menopause a thickened uterine lining often occurs. Extended menses, irregular menses, unusually heavy menses, brown menses also are common at peri-menopause. However, to rule out cancer, a biopsy should be done.
