Good Morning

Is anyone out there in the world of menopause using Pro Gest?

I take Remifemin and now would like to try a progesterone cream and have read that Pro Gest is very good and very safe, and can help you sleep more soundly. I would really appreciate any information anyone would have. Thank you

Hi Lou, I used ProGest for over a year before switching to a prescription progesterone cream. Within a few days of use I was sleeping through the night for the first time in years and hot flashes began to subside. After six months my brain fog began to clear and I was able to concentrate and read again for the first time in about 3 years. I like the texture and scent of ProGest better than other brands that I tried. I still use it ocassionally for a face moisturizer and would be using it daily if my doctor had not cooperated with a prescription for a progesterone cream. Although the prescription cream is more concentrated and I use less, the dose is the same: 20 to 25 mg. per day.

Thanks Anifani4! I will be talking with my doctor next week and hope she will cooperate too. If not I will try the the progest cream. Did you use it 20 days on and one week off? Do most GYN's believe in this progesterone cream? I am really interested in trying it. I can't keep taking tylenol pm for sleep each night! Thank you. Lou

Jen, I have no qualifications to help so I'll just share my personal experience. The proper ratio of magnesium to calcium is 1/2 part magnesium to 1 part of calcium for best absorbtion. Vitamin D also aids in calcium absorbtion. I like Viactiv - a 20 calorie chewable form of calcium, that includes vitamin D and vitamin K. I take 1 in the morning and 1 at night. Don't try to take your calcium all at once, because the body can only absorb about 500 mg and the rest ends up as waste. I also take Solaray Magnesium Asporotate, 200 mg once in the morning and once at night. Don't forget to take a good multivitamin; Natrol makes good products, but you can find many choices at a health food store. Just avoid One a Day, or other kinds like that. I also take a mixed dry E to as an antioxidant keep my heart healthy and strong in addition to the amount in the multivitamin. Some women also add Dong Quai at this time. It has no known side effects (unlike many herbal remedies which can and do hurt people!) and is the most often used herbal remedy. I like Dong Quai because it works with calcium to ease my terrible cramps. I made quite a few changes to help me sleep more soundly. We put a CD player and speakers in the bedroom. Every night I start a CD of a rainstorm and the habit of it lulls me to sleep. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I use the remote to start the CD again. Sounds weird, I know, but it's really comforting to me and my DH. I really limit my caffeine intake and only have diet cokes or decaf coffee in the a.m. Chocolate can be a big problem for people too. If nothing has helped you, you might want to try resetting your circadian clock. I don't know much about it, but I remember reading about a clinical study showing that staying up all night and not going to bed or napping until the next evening at your normal time really helped end insomnia. One last thing, I've found that watching t.v. before I go to bed really keeps me awake too late. So, now I keep magazines by my bedside - dry ones like Scientific American and Discover or books by Stephen Jay Gould. I learn a whole heck of a lot from the articles but they aren't particularly stimulating like a good novel would be and so they don't keep me awake. Whatever works, I guess! Sorry to go on so long! I can't believe I had to Google what I did to get here. I'm assuming I am post menopausal. I haven't had a period for almost 10 years but when I was tested is was not menopause. Btw I am 51. I can't remember what it was but a few doses of estrogen started it again but only for couple months I repeated that regimine twice before just not doing it. I liked not having a period. Fast forward 10 years I am now there however I have not had sex of any kind for 18 years. Last year I finally went into hiding from an abusive husband to whom I refused sex to for the beatings. I left him several times during my marriage but the criminal justice system let me down. He has never spent a day in jail for his crimes against me. I can't tell you what it would feel like to sit in a courtroom and hear the judge order him to anger management classes again. Which cost $50 a week so he would be waiting outside the courtroom when I would leave he would walk up and put his arm around me and tell me how bad I was gonna hurt for costing him that money. I am free now and I am suffering the worst case of horniness imaginable. I can't get anything to work and I am in tears. I don't want a man with what I have been through I just want it to stop. I am doing things in my sleep. I have to keep my nails cut off. I was in the women's shelter for abused women before getting on my feet but I can't afford doctors anymore. I left with nothing to escape it including health insurance and I walk with a limp and my face is scarred with a cheap snap on smile for the broken teeth so this is something I cannot understand and I do think men know. I assure I don't flirt or dress provactively but I am hit on all the time. My only urge is to cut their penis off and take it with me. I sure don't want the rest of them. I'm not functioning well and I have had more serious medical issues that I did get to see a doctor for those things and yes I mentioned it. For my other medical issuers the doctor said no hormones that I should give into it that it was the healthiest thing to do. What kind of crap is that? He knew what happened to me Because he stitched me up enough. He wrote a letter to the court but nothing put my husband in jail. He gave my mother a heart attack on Christmas day. He terrorized my family. So I just can't let a man touch me so I am begging to know what there is that I can do. I'm sure it would be a blessing if I had had a good man . it's too late for that now

Hi Puff, I too started once with the pro-gest. The few doctors I have talked to about it say you cant rub enough in to really do any good. I am not sure about that. I do think the balance is the key. Doesnt it say on the tube to start with a small amount and work up? Are you using the highest dose on the label. I am just impressed that you have a dr. that will do blood work and think it is actually accurate. Usually the MD;s just dont go there. Keep staying the course, if you think it was working, then dont let the blood work (which may flucuate greatly at different times of the day) change how you feel about the results you were having... When it comes to this time of our lives, how we feel is has got to be our yardstick in which we measure.things. Even hormones replacement therapy doesnt work ALL the time. so dont expect the progest to straighten it all out all the time. Make sure you are rubbing it in a different area every day. I DID have the same tightening pressure in the head when I wake up bit it went away after I cut out my overindulgence in tea and coffee. I still DO wake up around 3 am. sometimes, I am wide-awake, and I AM ON HRT! I have noticed if I keep up with a high level of calcium -- my GYN said 1500 mg of calcium AND 800 IU of Vitamin D is also necessary. Don't forget to get the type of calcium that has magnesium, else you are really not absorbing the calcium into your system! So everything working in concert correctly has helped me get a solid night's rest but if I forget my vitamins, then the HRT has no effect... The other thing I have noticed is if I wake up hungry at the magic hour of 3 a.m... I sometimes have not eaten enough for supper (ergo the cure of those who take tryptophan)... I often skip dinner and graze on smaller items... so had to cut that out... But I am going to try that natural progesterone cream... anyway, Doc says he will only keep me on HRT for a very short period of time, wants me only to take it every other day, but I need to work for a living and I need my sleep. But like I said, it is not working that great anyway... You can try the HRT for a short term just to see it's effect.. I remember taking two pills the first night and it knocked me out and proved that it was a key piece of the puzzle. I went to a sleep seminar not too long ago when it first started happening to me at age 53, and when the speaker asked for a raise of hands for a) who is under stress then b) who can't fall asleep and c) who is menopausal, man, the hands that went up was astounding.. I then realized this is biological and definitely related to the whole hormonal complex..... of course, it pays to stay as calm as possible as pointed out.. perhaps your headache is related to a bit of panic? At the very least if it continues, ask for a blood pressure check... be well

I'd venture to say most gyns do not "believe" in the otc progesterone cream: evidence use of the words yam scam and other negative attitudes by the western medical profession. Dr. John Lee, the biggest proponent of natural progesterone cream, is profiting from a theory that was never proven scientifically - a no no as far as medicine is concerned. Since he is an MD, I have always been puzzled by his apparent lack of interest in proper research for his theory. Still, I gained some insight from his writing, and had a strong feeling that progesterone was what I needed. Turned out to be right, fortunately for me. But I don't believe it is the panacea that he claims.

When I started with ProGest I used 1/4 tsp twice a day for two months straight. I gradually cut back on the dose to once a day. Some months I took a 5 day break, others I felt so bad after a day or two without the progesterone that I went back on it. Now I take a 3 to 5 day break every 6 weeks or so. I can not explain how I "know" when to do it. Some inner wisdom lets me know how much to use and when to stop.

Hi Ani and thank you.
I really want to try the cream, and will give my gyn a chance to say here is one I like, but if that does not happen, I will try Pro Gest. Can you buy that at a vitamin shop such gnc or do you have to order it. Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate it. Lou

Dr. Lee got his information from Raymond Peat, PhD Yes it is proven every day in Dr. Lee's practice (and other sensible MDs, DOs and Naturopaths)and in women who see the common sense in the biology and research and try it on their own.

The pharmaceutical companies cannot have monopoly on natural progesterone, so synthetics is their money maker.
