using rogaine for hair thinning

I have read a number of messages from women who say they have had success with men's rogaine. This prompted me to run to the drugstore to make my purchase. But when I read the label, I decided against buying it. It said "not for use by women." So my questions are for those women who are using it: Did your doctor tell you to try men's rogaine, as opposed to the women's formula? Is your hair thinning all over (mine is), or is it thinning like a man's, on top? And is anyone having any side effects, other than oily hair? I wonder why they warn against women users. I contacted the manufacturer and asked if it was safe for me to use their product for men and they didn't even answer my question. Kinda danced around it...I have an appointment with my doctor, but it is a month away, and I would like to get started ASAP. I know you all understand my anxiety! thanks

my sil uses it until he and dd2 tried to have a baby, then he quit using it for the entire 9 months.

know how hard it it to deal with but glad to see you waiting for your dr's advice...

Before I started taking Rogaine, I would have a complete exam by your gyn and get your sex and stress hormone levels checked. The reason I say this is that (if I remember correctly) thinning hair is caused by an excess of androgen hormones in relation to female sex hormones. Rogaine may be fine, but I would want to know what was causing my hair to significantly thin. But that's just me :)

cheeky75, sorry it has taken so long for me to reply..been busy with christmas stuff. happy holidays by the way! yes you can only get it online. if you just type in nulockz.com it should get you right there. i would recommend getting a kit with the hair fibers, cause otherwise you would have to go back and pay more shipping and handling with another order. the reason i like the hair fibers is because you have instant results while you are waiting for the other products to actually give you new hairs. and BTW its no joke, those hair fibers are like magic...it looks like you instantly grow hair! where do you thin the most on your head? mine was mostly on my temples, but my hubby's back of his head and front area were pretty bad before we tried this. let me know what happens!

Have you tried the hair vitamins, biotin is supposed to help nails and hair. I was losing a lot of hair especially in front and started using Folicure shampoo and conditioner and also biotin. I have lots of new short hairs there and my part does not appear as wide as before. At least my hair has stopped falling off when I shampoo. I saw some topical Minoxidil for women at Target today which I may alsos try. I understand massaging also increases circulation, hanging your head down to draw blood there, as well as taking gingko biloba. It may help hair growth if nutrients are adequate. I would also review diet for adequate protein, minerals, etc. My mom had very thin hair like that and she was told to rub raw potato into her hair, I don't recall full details. Apple cider vinegar and sage tea rinse is supposed to help new hair grow in. Good luck, this is not a good situation for women.

Chisue, That might have been me who mentioned the fever since I suffered from hair loss after a fever a couple of years ago. I was sick again last week with about the same thing I had back in 2007 and as I was lying there sick as a dog, I kept thinking my damn hair better not fall out again! At least that is a temporary condition but gosh I was about to get a wig when it finally stopped falling out. I took a supplement that I believe helped my hair grow in a bit quicker - Ultra Nourish for Hair from GNC. It made my chin hairs grow faster too but I guess it was a trade-off. I also used a shampoo for hair loss that I picked up in the salon at Wal-Mart. I'm not sure if that helped. DH's grandmother got a hairpiece made and it looked great. I think if you are a suffering from a non-temporary loss of hair, that is the probably the best place to concentrate your efforts (on a nice wig or hairpiece).

I went to see my dermatologist yesterday for several reasons, one of which was hair loss/thinning. Mrs. H is right on when she talks about getting your hormone levels checked first. My dermatologist said it is an increase in the androgen hormones. My hair loss could be attributed to that, but I am also anemic, so that is another cause.

She said that using rogaine is fine and unlike men, women CAN stop using it.

Hi. I went to my doctor, finally. She didn't test me,but told me to take black cohosh daily and get more soy into me.I bought the black cohosh and had immediate results.I am losing only a couple of strands of hair after my shower,now.She also suggested going to GNC health store and getting vitamins specifically for hair. I didn't try that. As the Rogaine, she said I could try it, but to make sure I only use the women's formula. Thanks, Mrs. H and Cheryl!
