After 14 months bleeding again.....

I am 41 (42 in December) - knew I was starting perimenopause at 35. I had so many symptoms - starting getting migraines, my periods changed to shorter cycles. Eventually started skipping some for 3 months and then it would come back. Had hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Doctors kept saying, no...you're too young, even though my blood levels said otherwise. I had my last "official" period in August 2010. I had some spotting in January 2011 for about 5 days and about 2 days of spotting in March 2011. Nothing since. Then about 2 weeks ago my breasts felt full and tender - this lasted for 2 weeks. Then 4 days ago I started bleeding again - it started out watery and rust colored. Now it's been bright red and kind of heavy at times. Prior to all this I had been having pretty constant watery vaginal discharge for many months - no odor, itching, irritation. One doctor said it was due to vaginal atrophy. I have been to many different doctors in the last year - my original doctor left my insurance and I haven't been able to find someone I like. Everyone kept wanting me to take birth control pills - I did not want to. I tend to try and take a more natural approach to things - I believe in a combination of alternative and conventional medicine. In the March and April of this year though I had an ultrasound, MRI and blood work done. None of them showed anything of concern - no endometrial thickening, masses, etc. My MRI did say I had what was called a 6mm follicle on my left ovary in April. Not sure what that meant. My blood work was consistent with menopausal levels - high FSH, lower estrogen.

Anyway, this bleeding has me nervous. I've been having cramping too and when I would stand up from laying down there would be quite a bit, maybe that's normal though, but also some clots on the paper and in the toilet. I've been reading up on it and it seems there can be so many reasons for this from this being a period again (which I wonder about since I am still on the young side for menopause), to vaginal atrophy, to hormonal imbalance to cancer. Both my parents died of cancer young (brain and kidney) so I just get scared of that word. I am seeing a gyn tomorrow. I think the bleeding is slowing down somewhat - today is the 4th day. But I'm just curious if anyone else has been through something similar either being around my age and going into menopause only to have bleeding again over a year later or going over a year without a period and then bleeding and what the bleeding turned out to be. I just moved to a new area so have to see another new gyn and when I called the office and spoke to a nurse she just said that I was probably just having some post-menopausal bleeding like it was no big thing. I just didn't think any bleeding after what was considered menopause was normal. Also, I wasn't sure if I counted from last August when I had my last official period or from March of this year when I had 2 days of spotting.

Do you know that perimanopause starts around mid 30's? I suffered from migraines for years, since mid 20's. Now I am doing much better by using the followings,

Organic yam base progesterone cream
Vitamin B complex with Co Q10
Iron supplement (during and after periods)
Lady's Mantle herbal tea (brewed from dried herb)
Fruit smoothies (for better circulation)

I hope the above suggestions will help you, especially stop your bleeding. When I had my periods for 6 weeks, Lady's mantle tea mixed with a little Shepard's Purse was my lifesaver. My ultrasound results were also normal at the time.

There are many books you can find online relating to women's health and perimenopause. If you want to know more about natural progesterone, you can start with books written by Dr. John Lee and Dr. Virginia Hopkins.

I must try your "slug cafes" next year Cowboy, good tip on the dollar store baskets, I've got some rabbits here too. Iron phosphate usually works so well but last year it couldn't keep up with the pests, I so wanted to go to the more lethal slug bait but was too afraid I'd poison the birds and my dogs. Which reminds me just now of a nightmare I had last night, dreamed all of the hostas had come up, fully leafed out and I hadn't put any slug bait down! I was racing around like a madwoman trying to play catch up. How much sun is your Golden Meadows getting? It looks like it's in optimum conditions. I'm thinking of moving mine out from under a viburnum that's shading it a bit too much.

How do you figure blood tests can tell if you are done having periods. All blood tests can tell is your hormone levels. It can't tell if you are going to spot a bit. Things are not much different in this regaurd than it was when I went through menopause. I think your doctor was drumming up business and you paid the price. He as much as told you that with his last hurrah remark. A biopsy is usually done if there is a lot of bleeding or some other symptoms, not just a bit of spotting.

I skipped over the last few entries, but wanted to add a few things. You should be able to call Birth to 3 and have them do a free full evaluation on your son in your home. We were concerned about my son's speech and they came out-said everything was developmentally appropriate, but he was not talking as much as we thought he should and since I was a teacher just new it was best to be safe and if something was going on start addressing it as soon as possbible. He was also a preemie and was 6 weeks early and born 4.5 pounds. He reached 20 pounds at around 15 months. What helped him gain weight after that was that he accidentally got a cookie with nuts and once he was fine with that we let him start eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and peanut butter crackers which he LOVES. I think now MOST doctors say peanut butter is fine at one year, and I was honest with my doctor that he was eating peanut butter and thrilled that there was something he liked a lot. I would try peanut butter as long as you don't have any family history of allergies from it. Also, my first son's speech is developing wonderfully and my 15 month old says mama and dada but makes sounds for different words which my older son can understand and "translate" for me...very cute:)

thank you for your thoughts. my son does have some health problems. he was born full term but was born jaundice which was not the same as typical newborn jaundice which occurs several days after birth. his hemotologist said that his bilirubin was not severe enough to cause cerebal palsy but he may have been more sensitive to it which could have caused some brain damage. the jaundice was caused by the fact that he has hemolytic anemia. so his hemoglobin is always low (normal is 12-15, for his first year of life he was around 7-8, sometimes lower) he required blood transfusions at 3 weeks and 5 weeks. but he is really doing the best he can possibly can be doing. his hemoglobin went up after his first birthday and is now 9.6. as with most people suffering from anemia he sometimes can be sluggish especially when he is sick. but he has been healthy lately and numbers have been good so he is much more active. i am just really concerned about him gaining and loosing skills. his pt was the one who suggested going to the developmental pediatrician. hopefully they will get back to me soon with an appointment. the guy is so busy that he has a team that you talk to first and they decide if the child gets an appointment. also early intervention is giving me a hard time about evaluating him for speech. i might have to wait until august to get him evaluated at his comittee meeting. so i guess we will see. if they still give me a problem i can probably go through my insurance.
