The sun

I live in California... I am a native.... and all of a sudden I found that with perimenopause, I am now allergic to the sun! At first, I thought it was something totally different, but now I've run into 3 other people who've had the same problem... hives from the sun. :o( anyone else out there with this problem?

heathen1, did you see a dermatologist? Did you find out what you can do to help?
My husband is alergic to the ultraviolet rays and gets a terrible itchy rash and all they told him was to wear protective clothing and sunscreen and use a hydrocordisone cream for the itch. It really prevents it for him.

hi! No... the doc didn't know what it was.... I didn't know what it was till recently when I was not feeling well and didn't go outside and it went away! :D The minute I go out in the sun again, back it comes! I have another doc's appointment in a bit, then I can ask for a referral. Of course, then it will be fall and sun won't be a worry. :D
Oh, I always wear sunscreen, it doesn't seem to help.

Me!!! i filled the crate full of the stay green soil and have been sowing my seeds!! ohhhh man ohhh man!! i am sosooo anxious for this warm weather to come over here and stay here!! no more heater on, no more windows shut! and i'd love for the air conditioner to be off for like 2 months!! :')) but in ks thats an impossibility just from the humidity alone!! LOL sometimes i look outside and see its sunny then look at the temp on the pc, 49. ahhhhh!! then its gonna rain :'(( its april i'm ready for may flowers!! Hi Vera, I was born in Puyallup, WA. I'm sure you know where that is, but we moved to WI when I was a year old. I've been back there to visit a few times, but mostly to visit relatives in Tacoma. As I can recall, Eastern WA is much different than Western WA......Eastern WA much flatter? Anyway, about the weather here - you can expect anything and everything. Our summers can be extremely hot, in the 90's,or 100's, dry or humid, droughts and flooding, long cool rainy Springs that never seem to end, or so short we seem to go from Winter to summer. (Same for Fall) No matter what the weather is, the Hostas survive. And as Ken mentioned above, plant whatever you want, and if it doesn't do well, move it. Have fun experimenting. I know I will. Sun Gold, Sun Sugar or other yellow cherry?

Kris, that is strange because Sun Sugar is supposedly just a crack resistant version of Sun Gold. I've grown both and they taste really similar although the Sun Sugars have thicker skins that are slightly less appealing. Since I have dry summers I don't have problems with cracking, so I stick to Sun Golds. Sun Golds are so much better than Sweet 100 IMO that I mostly just grow Sun Golds as my cherry tomato choice.

Air Plant - too dry, too much sun, too little sun??

Hi everyone Emily - When I first started growing bromeliads (Tillandsias are also bromeliads despite what some people say). I was told by an elderly grower that if I looked at my plant's leaves, they would tell me what they required in the way of water. If the leaves were curling up at the edges, this meant that they needed more water. This was the plant's natural response and by doing this, the leaves were turned up so they were able to catch and hold more more water from rain or dew. If on the other hand the outside of the leaves were turned down, it prevented them trapping water and allowed it to run off immediately, thus preventing overwatering. In summary, if the leaves are turned down at the edges the plant has sufficient or too much water and if they are turned up they are too dry and require more water. I have always followed this rule when deciding when to water and it works well for me as an indicator. Finally, it's always worth remembering that more plants (of any type) are killed by too much water rather then too little; if you can't decide if the plant needs watering or not, put it off for another day or two rather than risk overwatering.. That's a bummer! How 'bout full sun block? Wearing protective clothing is a pain too. I hope there's something that you will be able to do so you can still enjoy the sunshine. Keep us posted, ok.

Well, the rash is pretty much only on my face and neck... why? I dunno! With our 100Âº plus temps during the summer, I'd pass out wearing protective clothing. It's been near 100 here this week in Sacramento. I have a pool too, but I generally swim later in the day. I wonder if that, oh I am having a blank on the name of it, it used to come in colors... as a total block out would work... I might look funny with it all over my face.... but I could wear it at home.
