Do periods just stop instantaneously before menopause?

Good evening ladies!
I have been told I am perimenopausal and was wondering if your period just stops instantly? My last AF was July 14 and it consisted of bright red blood, no clotting and was prevalent only upon wiping for five days. On July 31 went to the Dr. felt like my hormones were out of whack with PMS symptoms, severe nausea and diarrhea. Since then no AF, nauseated all day and diarrhea. I have no other symptoms, no night sweats or during the day, no mood swings, increased libido and definitely no vaginal dryness, no problems sleeping, no sudden urges to pee, no anxiety no symptoms at all. Oh, I am 49 years old. Any advice please?
