Hot flashes stop after only 5 months

I started having very mild hot flashes in mid-February. Not too bad at first, just a comfortable warm sensation. Gradually they increased in heat and duration until late June when, suddenly, they just stopped. It's been three weeks since I had a hot flash. I've had a few very mildly warm sensations that lasted about 2-3 seconds and were so mild I barely noticed them... in fact if I'd never had a hot flash I would not have noticed them at all. Not only that, but I can actually sleep all night again with a light blanket over me.

I regularly exercise, eat a very healthy diet, very little sugar, no alcohol, and just 1 cup of regular coffee in the morning. I don't take HRT or any other medications.

Is it common for them to stop after only 5 months? Or do they briefly stop, and then start again? Our weather has been hot (upper 90s, almost 100), so weather has nothing to do with this.

I have no advice for you, but I'll say this -- I could have written your post. I don't even have the one cup of coffee in the morning, LOL.

Could we have escaped so lightly?

mclarke, very interesting that our experience and our healthy lifestyle are the same! Interesting, but not a big surprise -- after all, that's why we do this, right? :-)

Here is a great article that explains why the exercise works. I didn't find that it helped me when I started with the soaking sweats ! Maybe because I had already been so active and so it didn't shock my system in to behaving. Anyway I thought I would link this for those of you that are suffering. I have been on Estratest for about 14 yrs now. I had a hysterectomy/saved my ovaries in 1996 and then went in to menopause in a huge way 2 years later. This often happens as the uterus does contribute some estrogen so when it is removed you slowly go into menopause even though you still have your ovaries.The Estratest is a good HRT because all women have and need testosterone and this hormone combo contains a tiny amount. I found that my sweats and insomnia and lowered libido vanished in a week. I was so impressed. I now tell anyone that asks that they can pry the bottle out of my "cold dead hand" . My MD has no problem with me staying on it. There is no increased risk for breast cancer as it doesn't contain progesterone and the way I look and feel and my diet and general health do not indicate a reason to change. I also am very happy to find websites like this. Never had a problem until 64 and doctor thought I needed some estrogen for "dryness" issues. I was on Estriol compounded as it is not sold in U.S. but is in other countries. 2 1/2 months had to stop using as it made me ill. I realized later it was ordered too strong . My Gyn was also an Ob and specialized in adolescent pregnancy. What was I thinking !! Started very disturbing symptoms about 2 months after the end of Estriol. Profuse sweating, followed by chills, rapid increase in heart rate (over 130), dizziness and nausea in the middle of the night, night after night. I was so exhausted I ended up passing out and in the hospital. First Cardiologist, then Endocrinologist and finally going next week to GYN specialist. Of course went through the "you must be having anxiety" talk. Did I mention I am a retired Major in the Army Nurse Corps and psychiatric trained Reg. Nurse. I only mention this as I was almost starting to believe them. Thank GOD, and I mean this, I started to do my own research. Hot Flashes and Night Sweats with severe vasomotor reaction, very common. Well I say with all my heart thank you ladies for sharing on sites like these. It has been 81/2 months and they are definitely less. I am using magnesium, Vit. E, watching sugar intake, doing deep breathing , trying to control stress and thinking about Remifemin. Good luck to everyone .

I am one of those people that think that losing weight would solve half the Americans health problems... but usually, that doesn't include menopausal symptoms, due to the fact that estrogen is stored in fat, so it makes sense that the fatter one is, the less menopausal symptoms they have... but I dunno. Glad it worked for you! Stay thin! :o) You GO GIRL!

God love ya! I've had all kinds of hot flashes the past ten years and they continue but have lessened. I've had the ones that make my face flush terribly and then I break out in a sweat. I've had the one that feel like I'm a thermometer and the heat rises somewhere from my abdomen and up thru the top of my head. They can last a minute or several minutes. The ones I get the most of now are at night. I can go to bed so tired and cold and just when I get comfortable and ready to doze off, I'm sweatin' like I'm in a steam bath. My mother was 85 when she passed and she continued to have hot flashes till then. Yes, everyone is different. I think of it as "surging" now! But, I never get use to them. Hang in there!

I went all last winter without a flash, thinking Oh Boy my cohosh and soy is working yea!. However, when hot weather returned in April the flashes came back making me believe my herbal remedy wasn't what kept them away at all it was just the cold weather. I'm now just taking Estroven for the vitamins and estrace vaginal cream for dryness and the hot flashes are being kept at bay again. Is it the meds or just my body who knows, I'm just glad I'm not flashing because it's hot here too (mid 90's)

I hate to be a grinch and maybe you have escaped the hot flashes but I have had hot flashes on and off for a couple years - I thought they had stopped but they returned two times after flash-free periods of months.

However everyone is different so I hope that your hot flashes stay away! Mine have been the worst ever in our hot temps recently - perhaps it is the contrast between our temps outside and air conditioning inside that is confusing my hypothalamus!

I do lead a healthy lifestyle but admit I do need my 2 c. of strong coffee in the morning and maybe it is time to give it up (sob).

I'm going to be a party-pooper too.
You probably ovulated or something and your hormones were at a level that made you not have a hotflash.
I haven't had a period for 4 years, and I'm still doing funky things off and on.
Hopefully, you're just one of the lucky ones and its all over for you!

I started having hot flashes over a year ago and they have not let up much at all! I was on HRT but had to stop before having surgery in December. I was doing better for awhile after that and was SO relieved as I could not imagine having hot flashes while recovering from major surgery! I haven't gone back on the HRT and I'm very tempted to try something else. I have 2-3 hot flashes each hour and wake several times at night because of them. Doesn't make for very restful nights for sure! Still nice to know I'm not alone in this! Thanks ladies!

I just wanted to let ladies know that my flashes have stopped, thank god its been an awful time. A combination of chinese medicine with acupuncture and liver flushes have helped me.

I’ve been searching this because my hot flushes stopped also.I’ve had them for almost a year when suddenly they disappeared. I haven’t changed anything I was doing. I don’t exercise and eat pretty much everything I’m not proud of it it’s just I haven’t tried

I think we’re just lucky for now
