How hot is 'heat?'
Comments (3)There isn't just a single magic number that will trigger this intolerance.....as in 99% of gardening, it depends :-) Depends on the plant, depends on the time of day it is exposed to heat, the type of heat and even soil moisture content. But that said, there are plants that are considered to be cool season plants or heat intolerant - sweet peas are a classic, ditto pansies. And a fair number of common veggie crops do not do well in hot weather - they bolt or fail to develop properly. These types of plants generally perform best if they are planted early enough so they can mature in mid to late spring before temps rise or in late summer to flourish in the cooler fall temps. Even some plants that are commonly considered for hot weather - like tomatoes - will stop flowering and setting fruit if temperatures exceed a certain point. Temps in the 90's are for sure "hot" :-) The AHS heat zone map rates areas by the number of days the temperature exceeds 82F, if that is any help....See MoreRio Samba
Comments (7)I have a Rio Samba tree rose. I'm in 7a philadelphia. I have had it for only two years but have not had any disease issues so far. I still have two or three beautiful blooms on her, and a few faded ones, which I appreciate given the changing season and cooler weather. She put out a whole bunch of booms once it started to cool down. It may be the last day or so for them, but right now they are wide open and beautiful. I love the color of Rio Samba and don't really mind the fading blooms. The color changes are fine by me. I actually like having several stages of color going at once. She is in a pot right by my door, so I do normally deadhead as I go by, but have stopped since the weather got cooler and she put out the last 10 blooms or so. I suppose the really dead looking blooms are unattractive, but that would be true for any rose, I guess. So, if you like her coloring I would try her. I'd like to have another in bush form to put in the ground, but I am running out of space as it is....See MoreGreen Garlic/Spring Garlic?
Comments (2)You have some options as to what to plant for green garlic - you can plant a full head, individual cloves and just space them closely or the little bulbils that come out of the seed heads of hardneck garlic. All will work fine to get essentially garlic scallions. Garlic chives are a different thing - allium tuberosum versus garlic which is allium sativum - but garlic chives do have a very mild garlic flavor and work well in cooking though they are a bit invasive via seeds when left in the ground. Depending on the weather in your zone, you could probably get green garlic for harvest in either spring or fall. The problem with succession planting for full season harvest is that garlic is day length sensitive and it will drop all its leaves and go dormant during the long hot days of summer. In zone 5b, if you planted for green garlic now, you might get some harvest but by mid July almost all of my garlic has died down and bulbs left in the ground don't start again until mid September at the earliest....See More'heat intolerant'
