periods 9 years after menopause!

I have been on HRT for approx. 2 years..I am 59 years old.. (prometrium & vivelle dot patch). Last year, I had 2 periods (thought it was odd, but thought it might be altitude related, since I was visiting Colorado both times! ) Now I am having a period in my home state, out of nowhere, lasting more than 5 days w/cramps. Is this normal? My ob/gyn wants to do an ultrasound. Does anyone know what this entails? Is this a non-invasive ultrasound? Has this happened to anyone else? Of course I am scared to death about CANCER. Comments, anyone?

Hi ginny,
I've had several transvaginal ultrasounds, which is what I'm thinking your doc wants you to have. They are easy and not painful. They insert a probe up your vagina, and get good pics of the thickness of the uterus and of the ovaries.
Try not to worry about some awful disease. Hormones can do weird things. When is your ultrasound?

Ginny, did you see your GYN? It's not normal for a woman to start having periods again after going through menopause. You need to be checked right away if you haven't already gone to your doctor.

How do you figure blood tests can tell if you are done having periods. All blood tests can tell is your hormone levels. It can't tell if you are going to spot a bit. Things are not much different in this regaurd than it was when I went through menopause. I think your doctor was drumming up business and you paid the price. He as much as told you that with his last hurrah remark. A biopsy is usually done if there is a lot of bleeding or some other symptoms, not just a bit of spotting.

I had a sleep study last May, which showed I had various sleep problems (apnea, alpha wave intrusion, no REM sleep). It makes me wonder if lots of women going through menopause begin to have these kinds of problems. I guess I'm finally going to think about trying a cpap machine, but I think it will be a challenge. In retrospect, I really think its been my sleep problems that have made the past 10 years pretty much a constant struggle. I think sleep deprivation can cause all sorts of craziness. Even if you think you've had a good night's sleep, it doesn't mean you have.

Carolyn407, would you update us on how you are doing...? Not to be nosey, but woman always put whats going on but dont ofter follow up on how it turned out. It would be helpfull to know if you saw a Dr., and if everything turned out ok for you. Especially after what jtswife wrote.

Sorry you had a period ! wow a whole year and.. so what does that mean really? Do side effects subside as the months go by without a period? And then ..So say the following year or two one starts feeling normal? I can't figure it out .Great post!

My mother-in-law was 76, 26 years post-menopause for her, when her doc decide maybe hormone replacement would help her early-alzheimer's symptoms. Within two days of hormone therapy, she was almost hemorrhaging.

Artificially replacing hormones can be a benefit in some cases, but can cause sudden, dramatic events in others.

I am curious as to why at age 59 you have been on HRT for two years... were you really late in undergoing menopause?
