Zits and hair

Has anyone experienced a sudden crop of spots?

I seem to not only have sprouted a moustache overnight but big red boils on my chin. This started two months ago and I depair.

Sounds to me like your testosterone level may be up a little, or maybe your estrogen levels have dropped in proportion. Have you had hormone levels checked? That's just a guess.

Yes. It happened to me. I never had acne as a teen but got it when I was in my late forties and going through menopause.

I took a friends advice and started using ProActive and it cleared things up for me. But, I am sure you could used any good brand acne treatment. I have heard that Murad has a good acne control product set also. Check the internet an ask around.

I happen to be one of those indiviuals who got acne when I tried using the birth control pills in my late twenties. Amazingly they market BC pills as a CURE for acne and some women have said that BC pills worked for them to control acne as teens.

It all depends on your particular body chemistry and what works for you. I have noticed that ProActive has recently started using commercials featuring older women who experienced adult onset acne.

I still don't know what to do about all the facial hair I have developed. Right now I bought an electric razor and run it all over my face to get rid of the 'fuzz' and then pluck the course chin hairs and straglers.

The heat-waves have taken a break for a while, it's almost too cool, but it does a world of good for the tomatoes and the cukes, they are getting ready to reward me with abundance. The flowers are faded and cooked, the water-shortage this season has taken it's toll. Because of the water situation I haven't set out annuals at all, as a rule they are the ones to brighten up the late summer garden; I miss them. One advantage of not watering: no mole activity. All the song-birds have left by now, the winter-birds have not yet arrived. The wild turkey babies are almost as big as their mothers, they come to the pond (puddle) to drink and wander all over the property, scavenging in the horse arena, annoying Ralph, and scavenging in the goat area. The quail are bringing out their young, grouping together, having one or two males as look-out, when they give a signal call, the whole lot of them take to the air, the little ones right along with their parents. It is getting "early" later and "late" earlier, shadows are lengthening and the light is changing. In the coldest parts of the property the poison oak is turning red. Firewood has been delivered and is getting stacked - looking forward to El Ninio and the rainy season, the Earth is dry and thirsty, looking for replenishment.

I LOVE my cornstarch. It is so wonderful. My skin has been looking radiant and I credit it to the cornstarch mixed with just a tad of loose powder. Another thing I do (for the bleaching effect) is mix baking soda with powdered milk and an egg white. Beat it up real good, til it's frothy and kind of thick. Put it on your face and after about 15 minutes it will harden. Then just wash it off with COLD water. I am so happy I'm finally to this point... during my teens and twenties I had oily skin and I over-inundated it with all those zit medicines. I think truthfully, I was overdrying my skin and my skin would overcompensate by sending too much oil to the pores! But now that I moisterize day and night and use the cornstarch, my skin has zero problems. Kris you should try the honey and pulverized oatmeal on your face! It is awesome! It looks like someone got sick on your face (that is what my daughter told me, anyway) but your skin is sooo soft afterwards. - darkeyedgirl

I haven't worn a foundation in at least five years & don't miss it. As I've aged ('m 70) I seem to want less 'heaviness' or 'weight' on my skin. (I also don't miss having to put it on.) However, I have discovered a product this past year that I'm really pleased with: Olay Definity Color Recapture. It's a lightly tinted sheer moisturizer, light in texture & not sparkley. It makes my skin looks lighter & almost dewy. I find it at Target, Rite-Aid, CVS, etc. You could check products at these stores; they carry Maybelline, Olay, Neutrogena, L'Oreal, Max Factor & other lines that don't necessarily cater to the under-50 crowd. I use a powder blush & want to share a hint I read years ago. Instead of using a separate eye shadow (which may no longer look good at upper ages), stroke on powder blush under the brow above the eyelid. Also use it on the tip of the chin to add definition to the face. I'm echoing moonshadow - you are a good daughter. When we get so old, we age in ways we don't expect & it's pretty discouraging & depressing. We think & feel the same inside as we did years ago, but there's this ugly person on the outside.

I'm using a product with tea tree oil now to fight an unusually nasty case of lice we have been fighting since Thanksgiving and it seems to be the only thing that is actually working. However, I would not say we like the smell. I love the idea of using it before going to places like movie theaters! Once you have lice, you're all of a sudden hyper-aware of the susceptibility we all have to these nasty buggers. DH and I ordered an extra set of this stuff and will keep it on hand from now on - I plan to also use it when I go on trips and stay in hotels or fly on planes.

I am the same as you and I remember Birth control pills making my spots worse when I was younger. These spots are hard and red.
As I live in Turkey the way to get rid of hair is when you go to the hairdressers they get out the cotton. They hold it between their teeth and then roll it over your face. I am blonde by the way and my extra hair is white. I don't really notice it but the girls at the salon insist I am getting hairier by the week. It is a painful procedure but I tolerate it and bow to their better eyesight.

As bud_wi discussed up top, you could certainly use any name brand acne product to clear you right up. But, let me save you some time and $ by guiding you a bit. You can visit a page of the Murad site- http://www.murad.com/ibeCCtpItmDspRte.jsp?section=10119&item=14836&minisite=10020 and see a product called, "Age Balancing Night Cream." It specifically targets adult acne caused by hormonally-aging skin (peri/menopause). It contains retinol, which helps keep your pores clear for fewer breakouts. If this doesn't appeal to you, dig around the site a bit more to find their "Acne Complex Kit." I used it for years and it's helped me quite a bit. Either one would work. In addition to a skin regimen, you might want to alter your diet as well. If you simply start eating healthier foods, you'll see some drastic changes in not only the amount of acne you produce, but your overall complexion and tone as well.
