Mower won't start after sitting
Comments (10)You need to refine your use of the terms 'crank' and 'turn over'. They both mean the same thing, to turn the engine in an attempt to start it. This could be by manual pull starter or electric motor. The engine may 'crank' or 'turn over' with out starting, which could indicate one set of problems, or not 'crank', which would be something else altogether. As near as I can tell, the engine is not getting fuel, or not getting good fuel. You need to drain and discard any gas left in the mower/tank/carburetor and put fresh new fuel in. To this fuel add half a bottle of auto fuel injection cleaner. If you crank it some every day, you will pull the new treated fuel through which eventually will run the mower....See MoreOh my aching back
Comments (7)You're so lucky to get help. I do most of it myself or it doesn't get done. I'd kill for help in the spring & fall. My DH works out of town so he's gone Mon through Fri. He does a little garden work if I ask him but the poor guy deserves a break too. He & I will probably be the ones bringing in all the plants. My oldest daughter has 3 kids & it's more work when they help. Youngest daughter is moving to CA tomorrow. One son is gone all the time & the other one thinks the brugs are a stupid waste of time since you can't eat them. One of his friends stole a pod from my Datura a couple years ago & ate it (don't know how much). They said he was talking to the toaster & his parents took him to the emergency room where they kept him overnight. He's fine but it scared the crap out of the rest of them. I think it sunk in & his experience taught them a lesson. I read him the riot act when he came back since I had warned them to leave them alone & I threatened to pull all my other pretty poisonous plants before they tried to eat something else. It was a couple years ago & I haven't had a problem with them since. Linda...See MoreWHEN did Christmas get out of control?
Comments (39)This thread has been a great comfort to me since I'm another poster who has been through some less than happy Christmases. The upside is the creating new traditions (still working on that - I consider it a work in progress) as well as simplifying my decor style. However, I'm lucky in the sense that I'm not terribly influenced by the latest trends being put forward by the design industry. It has to be priced right as well as fit my style, so even with my everyday home decor it's a pretty slow slog. 90% of the time I walk out of the stores empty handed. Every generation seems to have the same complaint about the over-commercialization of Christmas. Yet I remember my paternal grandmother owning several items (linens, figurings) for holiday entertaining. I have vivid recollections of my mom (and I want to say this was 1965 or 1966) covering one of the walls in our DR with fuschia foil wrapping paper and arranging large branches spray painted white in front. I have a book published in 1962 that discusses outdoor lighting. In it are several chapters regarding Christmas lighting, including a discussion about garish, over the top displays. So in a sense many of these concerns have always been with us. IMO, what has changed over the years is more a response to the changing marketplace. How many of us here have gone to faux trees for purely practical reasons? I would never have switched if it wasn't for the fact that the quality sharply declined (when do they cut these things, september?) and the prices for a genuine fresh cut tree rose to ridiculous rates (over $100? Um, sorry, no). Then we have the whole spectrum of products that are about convenience - net lights, pre-lit trees and garland, and those airblown lawn decorations. Even if you're not a fan of the airblowns in general, you have to admit they have some distinct advantages for the average homeowner: run an extension cord, stake the thing in place, plug it in and you have insta-festive. And after Christmas they require minimal storage space. Sorry for the long essay, but I think some of the items we've seen come on the market in the past 10 years or so are a positive in terms of safety and saving time and money. Yes, there's a lot of stuff out there that leaves me scratching my head, but that always seems to be the stuff that they can't give away at the post-Christmas sales. ;-)...See MoreGetting a water softener going after sitting for a long time
Comments (14)For most effective resin rejuvenation is to get a large (8-gallon) white bucket and physically dump (I use a siphoning device) the resin into it. I rebuild many softeners and found that you could put an old unit through a dozen regens and never get it very cleaned out. I emptied one (48,000g) this morning after two backwashes and found two cups of sand in it which backwashing didn't even touch. Moreover, the water coming out was so cloudy, murky, oily, frothy that you could not see one inch through it. I put a hose into the bucket and flushed and then poured out the water---repeated three times before the water cleared up. The water also stunk quite a bit. This is typical even when the softener, while in use, doesn't show a lot of cloudiness. The bottoms of the tanks hold a lot unwanted matter. The resins were reddish but of consistent size and shape (and crunchy between the teeth!). Then I cupped the resin out into another bucket and found all the sand in the bottom---easy enough to separate manually, but backwashing wouldn't do it. This is fairly consistent with rebuilds in my area. I added 6 ounces of bleach and a sprinkling of Iron Magic and stirred and let sit for an hour. I flushed again until water was clear again. This time a more yellowish water came out. I replaced the resins in the tank and then put it through a normal regeneration. Presto, the best you can do without actually replacing the resins but not what most want to do or take the time (or pay someone else to do). Also, fill the empty tank back up with water and put a high concentration bleach in it for an hour or two, especially if there is any sliminess in the tank. Many times I show the customers what is actually coming out of their softener and they are glad I go to this degree to service their unit. Just simply backwashing, even with high concentrations of salt, bleach, iron out, etc., with help, but I do not believe it is the best you can do. Next time I will make a video and try to post it.
