Are fibroids the cause of an enlarged uterus?

Are fibroids the cause of an enlarged uterus? If not, what else could be the cause? My uterus is enlarged as though I am 15 weeks pregnant. I do have fibroids as well as an ovarian cyst. Several years ago a doctor told me I had an enlarged uterus, then a year later, another doctor gave said I had no problems at all. Now, a doctor tells me about my enlarged uterus and fibroids and cyst. He also said that I should be concerned if the fibroids grew this much in one year. Any comments?

My uterus was huge when I had my hysterectomy at 37 (kept my ovaries). The surgery revealed that I had no fibroids - which surprised my doctor - they diagnosed my enlarged uterus as being caused by a hormone imbalance. All I know is that my life made a giant turn for the better after the hysterectomy. Good luck.

i had a hysterectomy about 3 years ago. The dr said my uterus was very large. They did my hysterectomy vaginally. I think now they should have cut. anyway I had fibroids, I also had 3--10lb babies so i figured that was part of it,

Question any and everything you read in a public forum. There is always a mix of good advice and information with misinformation and utter b.s. Since there is a hormonal component to their development, stress and lifestyle are major factors with fibroids, genetics too can play a role. Herbs that increase circulation to the pelvic area can be helpful as can herbs that support the endocrine system (hormones) As stated above many women do nothing except wait for the menopausal shift in hormones which makes them a non issue, a viable option unless they are causing you trouble in some way.

I have a fibroid that has enlarged somewhat(now 3cm) over the last few months. My dr has recommended a subtotal hysterectomy, where only my uterus will be removed. Only the cervix,and ovaries remain. Does that mean the fallopian tubes will be removed also? I am having difficulty emotionally, and am contemplating not having the surgery done because of all the information that is out there. I am 43, and have had infertility issues in the past. I have mild endometriosis on the outside of my uterus which never prevented my last two pregnancies, which I took fertility drugs for. I had one other pregnancy previous, no fertility problems ever, at the time was 19. Somewhere in my twenties I developed infertility problems. I am so emotional as to having this surgery done because of all the side effects. I am going for a second opinion before consulting with my dr again. Has anyone had a myomectomy done prior to having a subtotal/partial hysterectomy done? What about ablation? This has always been a an emotional journey for my husband and myself. We have gone thru a total of five pregnancies, and two of them were miscarriages. The last miscarriage almost killed me, and I hemorrhaged pretty bad. My dr says it was due to the enlarging fibroid. I know with my age it is getting harder and harder to conceive, but having a hysterectomy will definitely change everything. We are not sure about conceiving again, because of the most recent miscarriage, but we always wonder what if they (drs.) were wrong?? My dr seems to be pushing for a the subtotal hysterectomy instead of myomectomy. I am having second thoughts... very difficult choice to make.

I won't comment about the fibroids and enlargement of your uterus, but I've been an ENT nurse for 22 years and I urge you to seek a 2nd opinion prior to having surgery on your sinuses. Have you had a CT of the sinus yet? or at least a limited CT or a sinus series? There is no way (no matter what any doctor may tell you) to tell if it is your sinuses without one of these studies. The CT is the best. There are many ENT specialists who jump the gun, performing sinus surgery that isn't needed. It's fast and easy money for them, and many of them take advantage of their patient's "ignorance" of his/her sinuses. I do not mean ignorance in any sort of demeaning way, but we are all ignorant at some point about certain areas until we are educated about them. So, ask questions, get studies, and don't let someone start "reaming" out your sinuses at the drop of a hat. We have a friend who had sinus surgery with a clear sinus x-ray (he found out later) and he was left with meningitis after the surgeon knicked his brain case and he developed a cerebral spinal fluid leak. He is now deaf in his right ear and suffered from vertigo for 7 years until another ENT surgeon finally had to cut his nerve of hearing to control it (and this, I might add, doesn't always work). He suffered with this for 7 years because the 2nd surgeon waited until the statute of limitations was up for a law suit from the first surgery. They do stick together most of the time. Andierut

Hoooweeee Piksi, I can relate to that! Thought I'd go out the other morning and sit and have my coffee. Well, I noticed I needed to do some weeding, so I started weeding my garden, and the next thing I knew, I was DRIPPING with sweat! This hot flash thing is really annoying! A neighbor stopped by to talk and there I am looking like I just came out of the shower---that's another thing-I go in and take a shower and by the time I dry off, I need another one from sweating so much!! YUK!!! Just thought you might like to know that you are not alone!!!

I had the same symptoms as you, but at the time I was 37. I had the surgery and he intended to leave the ovaries, but once he could visually 'see' them the cysts were larger than we thought and one had become part of an ovary. He managed to save one ovary but it was functional for only 2 years. In hindsight, I wished he had taken both as I always worried about possible cancer.
My body did feel the results of no harmones for a while until it adjusted but I did try every brand and form of HRT. They all had an affect on me.....from nausea and headaches to arthritic hands. After an Aunt developed breast cancer, due to harmones, I chose not to take HRT and feel great. As others have posted, everyone is different and it's usually up to us to do lots of research and find what works.
If you doubt your doctor at all, do get second opinions. My doctor was happy to see me get second opinions (I got 2). Some insurance covers second diagnosis, but at the time I had to pay out of pocket. They all confirmed what my Dr. had said.
BTW, I think your Dr. is right that the number of years left for your ovaries to function are few.

I have been having nausea for about 6 months and the nausea is now getting worse. Went to urgent care where they said my uterus was enlarged. Now have to have an ultrasound to see what is going on this will happen Tuesday. Did anyone have nausea to the point of almost vomiting as a symptom?
