48 and off the pill after 6 years

I am 48 years old and have been taking loestrin 24 fe for 6 years. I have been off the pill for 3 months and still have not had my period. anyone have the same problem? could it be that I am at that age that i am starting menapause? I didn't get my period when I was on the pill so it may be that my body is totally out of wack. I still have an active sex life so I still need birth control but refuse to go back on the pill. Can't wait until I don't have to worry about pregnancy anymore! :) any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Check with your doctor. He is better able than we are to check on the state of your ovaries.

And yes, you could be well into menopause. The loestrin may have been keeping things artificially "normal"

There's a blood test available to tell if you're in menopause or not. it's called "FSH", follicle stimulating hormone. Discuss this with your doctor. I was on birth control pills from age 21 to 48 continuously, except for three pregnancies. From 48 to 53 I still got periods, though they were irregular, and I used a diaphragm. My periods stopped in 2007 but I still get hot flashes almost daily. Again, discuss this with your doctor. I went to a female Nurse Practitioner, with whom I was very comfortable.

After all those years of harsh treatment, and abuse, i'd say:"Consider yer self very lucky, and trade it in or sell it for parts!" yer whipping a dead horse, as the saying goes. Any day now, yer mechanic will probably tell you that you need a new tranny, or something equally as costly! With all of the heavy usage, i'm quite surprised the thing has held up this long! I figure, if i'd have to replace the tranny, or engine, i'd might as well go buy a new, heavy duty machine, as to keep torturing that one! JMHO: Rusty Jones

Thanks everyone. I am still waiting on the tests. Thankfully I have not had to have a hysterectomy and was lucky enough to be 57 when menopause hit. Re the food and products from the health food store, I did try both both but couldn't handle the recommended foods (actually I used to eat a lot of them which contributed to my acid based kidney stone at age 40 - but, hey, I probably owe my skin to said foods). In Canada - at least according to my GP, the Gyno and the pharmacist I have to take both Prometrium and Estrogel - not just the Prometrium - who knows? I just hope the doctor was able to get enough from the biopsy that she did without sedation so that I don't have to go into the hospital for a larger biospy - I figured it would be under a local - nope they knock you out. I had the mammo last Tues. - the results will come in the mail with a copy to my doctor. I may end up like SunnyDJ - taking something every 3rd or 4th day depending on the results and how I fare without it. Of course a lot will also depend on my test results. Cost wise it isn't cheap but since they are my only prescriptions and I will be covered under my husband's office plan for 18 months I won't worry about that. Our provincial insurance does not cover the cost of prescriptions until you turn 65 and then only some are covered - and not fully, there is a deductible and they are about to cut back on a lot of them - somehow I don't think HRT will be covered! I guess I should feel grateful that I have never experienced a hot flash. I don't sweat - ever - which of course is not good and no doubt accounts for my high body acid. And why I love the heat - but not the sun.

Just wanted to give you my experience with Plantskydd. It does work however I will never get it again. Even the guy that sold it to me said not to get the concentrate since everyone had issues with the sprayer clogging. I had a case of the ready to spray and I am happy to see the back end of it. It clogged no matter how well it was shaken. Only two out of the case even sprayed for a short time. I ended up taking the top off and pouring it out and flicking it from a paint brush. A friend had the same experience. It stained a gold Hosta for the entire season. The main ingredient is ovine/bovine blood & parts. My dog would lick at it even after it dried. I have used Bobbex and I am going back to it. Works great without the hassle.

I am so glad to find information on this subject! I am 47, and just recently went off the pill. I started at 20 and was only off long enough to have my 2 children. i had no problems with the pill and had short easy periods all those years. i just went off and was expecting to get my period like any other month. its a about a week past when i thought i should get it. i had long days of cramping for about 3 or 4 days so thought here it comes,but no bleeding. now that i've read all the comments from woman around 50, i'm thinking, wow, could i possibly not get periods anymore? i'd be fine with that. but a woman my age still worries about getting pregnant ,so condoms are a must! my kids are 23 and 21, they don't need any baby siblings! i have woken up middle of the night, the last couple weeks experiencing what i think may be the start of light hot flashes. my lower back has been aching quite a bit, but thought it was the darn shoes i bought, maybe not! after reading all the helpful discussions, i'm so glad to know i'm not alone out here.
