Anyon experience this? Age 53 - very heavy bleeding

I am 53 and had my last "full" period about 1 year ago. I had gone 11 months without a period & then got a period. I have not had a "full" period in many months. I have had spotting, or days when I thought I would get a period and then it went away. In the past few months the spotting days were about 2-3 times a month.

On Thursday January 15 2015 I "got" my period - the flow was very normal for me. Friday was normal also. Saturday was normal until I went to bed. I use tampons & had a "Super" in when I went to bed. I woke up at about 4 am and felt myself flowing. I had leaked a spot of about 8 inches diameter on the bed. I replaced my tampon and added a nighttime pad and went to sleep in a different bed. Throughout the next day and through today my flow has increased dramatically and (this is gross, sorry) I have passed many blood clots and all are at least the size of 2 tablespoons. throughout the day today I have inserted 2 "extra super" tampons and used a pad and I am soaked through in one hour.

Given that I haven;t had a full period in a long time I assumed that I initially thought was making up for lost time. When my flowed increased so dramatically I called my doctor. Today I went for a sonogram & an internal vaginal "scope". The woman doing the sonogram understand how much I was bleeding she was shocked - and she is 56 and had fibroids for a long time. She said she would get a hysterectomy if she had my symptoms!

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Thank you.

Hi, Yes when i was in peri , i would go 10 months without anything then get a period and a few times they were very very heavy and sometimes lasted 21 days, then i would go 5 days without and then have another period for 10 days .
I would get huge blood clots pass also .

I am not MP, but started getting very very heavy flow like you've mentioned for about 4 months. Then a whopper that lasted an entire month... I thought for sure I would bleed to death!

My doctor did blood work, sonogram, etc and everything checked out fine. He prescribed Megestrol (which was scary because everything I've read about it was for treatment of advance stage cancers!). He said it was to cause a more thorough sloughing of the uterine lining to get things back to normal. I took it for one month, and have been right as rain for the last two years.

The USDA/ARS Pecan Breeding & Genetics website (linked below) has descriptions and nut photos of a large number of the named pecan varieties, whether Southern, northern/midwestern, or far-northern selections - and in some of those descriptions, they comment on tree size, branch angles, etc., in addition to nut size and disease/pest resistance/susceptibility, pollen-shed/nutlet receptivity patterns, etc. I grew up in UCLA(upper corner of lower Alabama), where pecans - grafted and seedling - are everywhere. Have seen those broad, spreading orchard trees, tall timber-type volunteer seedlings in creekbottom swamps that may not have branches for the first 30-40 ft, and venerable old giants isolated out in the middle of cow pastures. Some develop short-lived yellow fall color, but many just go quickly to brown; it's a crapshoot, and as indicated, they're usually planted for nut production, not necessarily for aesthetic qualities - though the huge old Mahan and Stuart trees, now over 100 yrs old, shading my family home were most pleasing to me - and certainly provided welcome shade. Dr. Bill Reid, in his Northern Pecan blog - linked earlier in this thread - has an entry on 14 Sept that does a nice job of covering climatic adaptation of pecans - with regard to areas where maturation of nuts is possible. Evidently, the trees may be hardy and grow well in some areas of the country, but maturation of nuts may be a virtual impossibility due to insufficient growing-degree days(or whatever). My turn... with Ark's blessing I'm going to post some fall pics taken in Fort Smith yesterday. Unfortunately, the trees peaked 2-3 days before I could get the camera out and most trees lost a LOT of color, especially the sugar maples. Well, that puts a whole different cast on things. And, no need to apologize for being "long winded." Nobody ever accused me of being brief. Being explicit often helps get the information you need. If I were looking to sell and move in a couple of years, my own inclinations would come from working on my own houses and working with and for remodelers and renovators. (The video business sometimes gets pretty slow so I've had a checkered career over the last couple of decades.). Let me just say that I would be reluctant to spend any more on the kitchen renovation than I had to. It is very difficult to predict buyers' tastes, HGTV to the contrary notwithstanding. Simply put, some buyers will love what you do, some won't care one way or the other, and some will start gutting your kitchen the day after closing. I'll offer these thoughts for the things I'd consider for renovation for a near term sale. (a) wherever you put the new stove location, run both a 240v line and a gas line for maximum flexibility. You or anybody who comes after you can put in whatever kind of stove they like, gas, duel fuel, coil burner, radiant smoothtop or induction. Around here, that seems to matter more than the stove you leave behind. YMMV, of course. (This advice assumes that you do not have a slab-on grade house or major difficulties in running either new electrical or new gas plumbing.) (b) I'd skip the counter-depth fridge. As with slide-in ranges versus freestanding ranges, you may be paying a very large premium in price (and diminished storage capacity) for what may be mostly an aesthetic advantage. Again, YYMV, though. I don't know the specifics of your kitchen or the market for your house. There can be places where a CD fridge might be the only practical choice for the space and places where hardly any buyers care about refrigerator capacity. (c) Unless I were planning on taking the stove with me, I would skip consideration of any of the more expensive induction ranges. Actually, I would seriously consider that Samsung FTQ induction range simply because of the price. Assuming, of course, that the burner layout is not too weird for you. Like most induction ranges, It should be very easy to keep clean for showings. (Read the cleaning tips here, buy some microfiber towels, and get some cermic-glass cooktop cleaner/polish.) FWIW, Consumer Reports had the FTQ on its list of recommended induction ranges through the end of last year, two years after Samsung discontinued the model. As long as yours was made after 2010, it shouldn't have the cooling fan problems that generated most of the adverse comments. You might be using it only for next two years and it very likely will outlast that time. (It might last for decades. We just don't know.) At a clearance price, it should be far and away the least expensive choice, down there with coil burner ranges. It will likely beat the pants off any other inexpensive range you might put in there, both in terms of cooking capacity and ease of cleaning. Depending on your neighborhood and your real estate market, it could give you a bit of additional cachet -- "gourmet kitchen with induction range" and all that. Meanwhile, If "hubby" is doing his Mario imitations with Batali branded cookware, so much the better. The Batali enameled cast-iron (made, I think, by Dansk) works very, very well on induction. A final comment from a couple of posts back. You are in the NY area? Have a look at AJ Madison. The freestanding GE is currently $1709 there. If you can wait to the Labor Day sales, the least expensive Kenmore induction range will likely be under $1300. I've seen the current lower-end Samsung induction range, the NE595NOPBSR, down around $1200. (More conventional burner arrangement and pretty highly rated by CR, for what that is worth.) Since the Samsung FTQ has been discontinued for a couple of years, I'd offer $700 for it. Maybe have a look at what Sears is asking for ranges on the clearance pages.

Yes, happened to me at age 53, too. 9 months of no period, then a regular period for two months, then in that third month I had a period last for 27 days and it was heavy. My doc did a uterine biopsy to check things out - all was well. My menses stopped for good in the year after that.
It is unsettling, but it is funny what women don't tell each other. Just get yourself checked, and you may discover like we did that there is no cause for worry.

I had 3 fibriods when I was perimenopausal, and the bleeding was intense I told my sister I was afraid I'd drown in my sleep! I never skipped periods until the last few months before I finally went into menopause.

I didn't want a hysterectomy so I researched natural treatments for fibroids and came up with info about enzymes dissolving them. They were quite expensive so I bought a couple of types of digestive enzymes that contained the same things. It took about 6 months, but slowly my periods became more normal. I never went and had another vaginal ultrasound to see if they shank as who wants to go through that if they don't have to?

Hi, last fall I had a period that was quite heavy and wouldn't quit. By the time it was all over, it lasted 80 days and I had to take 2 iron pills a day because my iron had gotten to 7.5. About 70 days into the bleeding doc did a uterine biopsy and found lots of polyps and built up lining. She scraped me out well and the biopsy came back fine but I bled for 2 weeks after the D&C. I've had one normal period since then. If it gets bad again, she said I might need a hysterectomy. The polyps form when there is too much estrogen in relation to the progesterone (I believe). She had put me on synthetic progesterone to try to curb the bleeding until the D&C was done but it didn't work. Just a few months before, I'd had a pelvic ultrasound and it only showed a thickening of the lining they said was probably just build up before a period.

One thing I did discover being on the progesterone was that my knees quit hurting. Could not stay on it though once the bleeding was under control. But my knees are not as bad as they were before. yay!

Now, I'm having night sweat/hot flashes that are waking me just before they happen. Bought some Black Cohosh today to give it a try.

To any of you suffering from heavy bleeding, I long ago figured out the culprits and cures - yes, cures. First - here's my YES list, then later, see what to avoid.

My YES list:
- Loads of good-quality Bing cherries, and/or Juice of black cherry
  concentrate. NOT from toxic plastic containers, rather glass. And the
  more Viscous it is, the better (i.e. more sticky, slow-to-flow.
- Also: lots of probiotic yogurt such as Vanilla or Peach Stonyfield. Or Raspberry Lifeway-Kefir.
- Also: Lysine/smooth type of foods, such as Eggs, yams, yellow oils, veggies, Unsalted soda crackers, sweet/sticky fruits/melons.
- Also: see my tips on this "flu" site, because alot of those tips
  may resonate with you and help toward the bleeding issues as well.

- Also: Gabapentin might help (if you can get a doctor to prescribe
  it). It helps to relax my nerves toward computer(EMF) use, and relieves
  headaches, so I suspect it can relieve bleeding.
My NO list:
- Heavy exposure to bright lights & EMFs & WIFI & so forth.
- Hi
  sodium, citric-acid, citrus, sodium-nitrite, sodium-citrate. Some of
  these can be hidden inside foods at health stores as well.
- Spices, raw onion, raw garlic. Some of these can be hidden inside health foods.
- Stress/chemicals.

I follow up to my original post - the cause of the bleeding was a polyp. My gyn removed it during my office visit following the sonogram. I was on progesterone for about 3 weeks total and the bleeding ended completely. At this point I am 18 months period free! I occasionally have a hot flash but nothing debilitating. My sex drive has absolutely plummeted - my DH has been very good and we have worked it out. I have gained about 20 lbs - I am working on that now - working out again & eating better. My sleep has been pretty good also.

All in all I am in a good place!
