urinary tract infections updates
Comments (6)Glad you found something that works! I'm going to CVS tomorrow & will see if they have them & get mom some. She hasn't had a problem since she left rehab but she still has to go often so it might help that! Maybe it is irritation & can heal it up. Hope you have a great checkup at Mayo! Mom has been cancer free for several years now except CLL which isn't causing a problem but has to be checked every 3 mos. Thanks for the update! Comments (2)It might make him feel better, and if the infection is just at the discomfort stage, might be able to tip the balance enough so a healthy person's body can fight it off. But he's a DIABETIC and needs to be much more aggressive about fighting infections. Reading that tip ... it might be just the increase in water intake. The OTC pyridium tablets will also ease the discomfort, but they aren't enough to get rid of the infection....See MoreUrinary Tract Infections
Comments (13)Laurie, Thanks for your suggestions, but I will not switch to canned food. I've seen what it does to teeth. I do brush my dog's teeth frequently, and I give her hard bones to chew on...but I am just not into canned food. I will find other ways to prevent the UTI's. Also, she drinks tons of water as it is. Thanks for your input though. Cynthia, Yes, same dog. That's what my vet said...he said it may be from the neuro issues. I couldn't see why, but the truth is that it's gotten worse since she had the spinal meningioma. She does see a neurologist, and had an MRI 6 weeks ago which showed scar tissue in the area where the tumor was removed (and also radiation was done). Her current neurologist (and also a top neurologist in my state that did the initial surgery) both say that surgery to free up the scar tissue is way too dangerous and probably won't fix the situation, since scar tissue is WAY too difficult to remove...and the surgery could likely end up in paralysis. She also has bad reactions to steroid treatment. So there is nothing I can do "medically". However, she goes to a chiropractor weekly (I know, I thought it was crazy too...in the beginning - but I had to find other ways to help her), and since she has started going she is able to JUMP into my SUV (couldn't do that for 3 years...which was when this all started) and she also immediately stopped having BM accidents (which was a result of the decline in anal tone). So the chiropractor visits are helping. She's also taking a holistic anti-inflammatory pill daily. I started putting water in her food last night as per Laurie's suggestion, and I will continue to do that indefinitely (I hear what you are saying about not letting it soak...I also don't want to do that because that will defeat the purpose of giving dry food for her teeth). And I will go get some cranberry capsules today. Thank you so much for your suggestions - I really appreciate it. Gabi...See MoreUrinary infection, round 3
Comments (14)Hi, we had similar problems with one of our dogs. he was adopted and I am not sure if he had problems before. He had one UTI and then we had two weeks of antibiotics then he had another about 2 months after and it cleared up with 2 weeks of antibiotics. The vet checked for bladder stones, as I guess that can cause UTI's. He was ok though. About a month later he had a third one and the vet gave us two courses of two different antibiotics, thinking that the first antibiotic wasn't clearing all the bacteria. We have been UTI free for a couple months now. (crossing fingers!) So I think the vet was correct thinking that the first antibiotic wasn't working very well. Our dogs are always inside so we usually catch the infection within 24 hours. First day, he vomits once or twice. Then he starts to need to go out more and more. By the early morning he is not wanting to go in and stays outside squating and trying to pee. He may vomit more. Then we usually see blood in his urine. It happens VERY fast. Usually he starts getting sick in the evening (of course the vet is closed :( and by the morning he has blood in his urine. We have successfully held off the infection from getting too bad by making him DRINK so he has to pee alot and that helps to clear out the bacteria. I put gravy in his water once and he loved that! He loves to swim so sometimes we put him in the bathtub and let him play. He plays and he swallows water and then has to go bathroom alot. This usually makes him more comfortable over the night while we wait for the vet to open. The vet always gives him an antibiotic shot and another shot of steroid to make him thirsty, then we start the pills that day. You can see a HUGE improvement within an hour after he gets the shots. Usually by the evening he is holding his urine again and by the next day his is almost normal. We give him boiled chicken for that entire day, as it is easier for him to digest and we don't want him to vomit. the vet said some dogs just get the infections and it isn't something you can prevent. Also that stones can cause infections. I was thinking that we needed to let him outside more so he doesn't hold his urine too long, but the vet said that he was sure that wasn't the problem. So, I vote for different antibiotics or maybe two courses of antibiotics. It seems to have done the trick for our boy. I am hoping he is cured of them. they are aweful and i feel so bad when he gets ill. -renee...See Moreoztrade_pacific
