Taking nothing at all.... yep

Have had..or been there for over 3 years now... just starting to think about taking natural supplement tho.. lower the hot hot hot flashes.... I beleive your body does compasate for the changes * sorry the english *. Not easy, but it has worked here.. have not gained any weight.. just hot.. lol...Also helping friends doing the same...no drugs, and good food... seems to work

I am going the same road as you, Lenora. Two years now, and counting! I know what you mean about the hotness, but I'm wary of taking anything, even so-called natural supplements. After all, herbs and other 'natural' things can have just as powerful effects as synthetic medications; nothing much more natural than and Amanita Death-Cap mushroom, but it can still kill you!

Hi ladies
I am now going into my 3rd month without any HRT! It was really hard adjusting, but now the only thing that I have to contend with is hot flashes especially at night! I use to be such a cold person, now I get very warm, very often, especially during the night. Do you find you get more flashes when you are very tired or stressed. Is there anything that will eliminate them, besides HRT. I do take Remefemin, given by my gyn. It is black cohosh, but I still get the flashes. Thanks Lou

Jenny, We stop up the line going into the first tub.(we use a nerf football :) Then we let the pump run to take as much water as possible out of all the tubs. Then either using a scoop or shop vac we scoop out all the muck. Cliff usually mucks it out will a jug -- emptying the muck into a 5 gallon bucket, then he walks around watering all the flowers and plants with the fish muck...The flowers and plants love it. Keep in mind we built our pond in 1997, that was the dark ages as far as the internet was concerned. We took books out of the library and then went shopping for a liner (nowhere was a bottom drain ever mentioned) Fortunately for us we shopped in a large pet store that sold pond supplies and liners. The owner had a large pond in his backyard and explained to us the necessity of the bottom drain and the dome top on the bottom drain. The pond floor is all slightly tilted toward the bottom drain to enable all the muck that settles on the bottom to naturally gravitate towards the drain. The water swirles around the drain with the dome top and flows through the drain into the tubs. The first and second tubs have the filter material. We cut sides of milk crates and wrap them in various materials like cotton batting and force them standing straigt up into the tubs. Most of the waste is trapped into the first tub. The last tubs hold our pumps, we have about 5 or 6 pumps ranging from 1200 gph to 500 gph. We usually have 2 going all the time one for the main pond and one for the biological pond, which we added the next year... (more about that another time) We like to have several small waterfalls all over the place, that's why we have several pumps. Another reason for the different sizes of pumps is we have more control over the flow. When the filters are in need of a cleaning the flow of water slows down and we have to slow down the pumps. If you want koi, forget about goldfish. The goldfish multiply like crazy and soon you'll be trying to catch them to give them away. We only have two goldfish (our original goldfish that are 12 years old) We also have 3 orfs they are the population control in our pond... One more recommendation, think about using a 4" drain. We have a 3" but if we were doing a pond today we would use a 4" drain. The shelf, be sure to build a shelf all around, ours is deep and wide -- we then built up to ground level with rocks. The only place we don't have a shelf is in the beach area. We also replaced all our small beach pebbles the next year with bigger round stones. It's easier to keep it clean, we hose it out about every two week, and when the rocks start to get an alge build up, we just turn them over to show a nice clean and shiny side. I love your 'standing on your head to see inside the jugs' comment! I've got a neighbor who's seen me peering down into mine each morning; makes me chuckle because she's dying to figure out what I'm doing over here, but I'm not offering information & she's (so far) not got up the nerve to ask! We live in a neighborhood where compost piles not concealed in tidy store-bought bins, happy hens clucking about & rows of taped milk jugs are NOT the norm! I'm still waiting for someone to actually define 'normal' for me...until then, I'll keep listening to my own drummer! Good luck with yours in those temps this week! I'm having to water mine everyday now, so looking forward to getting them into the ground soon. But the next few nights here we've got frost warnings so I'm closing mine back up in the evenings.

What's funny is that I can't even remember the finishes that friends and family have in their kitchens and bathrooms. I don't think that people remember or notice that stuff, unless they're in the process of choosing their hardware/fixtures or they're the kind of people who notice those design details. I went through the same thing: Mix or match. Except for the bathroom doorknob, I went with all chrome (light fixture, faucets, shower curtain rod, etc.). I love chrome! The only thing that isn't chrome are the vanity knobs and pulls, as I chose to go with vintage-style glass that has a center part that is nickel (nickel is not that large, so not too noticeable). I do love the look of mixed finishes, too, but I felt I would be most happy with chrome. Whatever you choose, choose it because you love it for yourself, not to please the designing world. You have to live with it. So unless you are re-selling your home very soon so that you are designing to make it pleasing to buyers (and you can't please everyone's tastes), choose what makes you happy and enjoy! I think it also depends on the layout of your space and your other lighting. We skipped them because we only have one run of upper cabinets, it's only 4 feet long, and it's not a primary workspace (mainly fridge landing zone, and toaster oven lives there so that takes up almost half of the counter). I also have them in my work kitchen and we virtually never use them, even at night, because they're not over the major prep/cooking space (which is an island in that case). So it seemed like we might be spending a big chunk of our electrical budget on something we might not use (and could add later if we felt the need). I did plan our overhead general lights so that one of them was directly centered on that counter. When we just had light bulbs in the fixtures, I was getting shadows on that counter and worried that we needed to add UCLs (our cabinetmaker insisted that he build space for them in case we ever changed our minds!) Once we put the shades on the lights, though, the shadows on the counter went away. BUT we have to have the overhead lights on to work in that space, which I would hate if it were a primary work zone. (We lit our primary work zone with pendants that are separately switched.) So short answer---no, you don't always need them. But in your plan, it looks like 2 and 3 are major prep zones---so I think you need them there. Even if you have incandescents for 2, you will still get some shadows under the cabinets there, which might bug you if that's your major work space. (You might get away with not having them for 3 if you mainly plan to work between sink and range and have good range hood lights, but if you're doing them on one side, might as well make it consistent.) For 4, it really depends on what that space is for. If it's work space that you want to be able to use independent of general lighting, I'd put them there too. If it's just fridge landing space (is that the fridge in that corner? can't tell!), probably not a huge deal. HTH!

I'm always so happy to hear of women who don't take anything.....and don't want to jump off a bridge! I am struggling with things. I wanted so badly to get off my patch, and gave it 2 and 1/2 months........but life got so bad, I cried "Uncle" and put the patch back on. I truly believe I am an alien and don't have the usual human body.
I have been way too hot my whole life.....but now that menopause is staring......I actually get cold flashes! I've always had the opposite reactions to everything.
One question I have for you all.........It seems like there's not an OB/GYN alive who thinks it's okay to not take hormones (unless you have a history of breast cancer). It's really scary to do it "eau natural" when the medical community has us convinced that our body's will snap in two, and we'll drop dead of cardiac arrest if we don't take HRT. At present, my life is unliveable without HRT......but I'll sure try again some time to get off it..........maybe when my kids are moved out of the house, and I have nothing to do but scream in pain with constant headaches, and nail plywood over all my doors and windows and shake with fear and panic in some dark corner. ;)
Anyhow.......I'm really happy for those of you who can do without this stuff!

Sorry that you are having such a hard time, Catherine, and only you can decide what you need for it. The reason that I have no problem with the medics you mention is that I don't go to them! I have a local doctor (here in France) that I go to for anything such a recent sinus infection, but I have never consulted him with regard to my menopausal symptoms, and do not plan to, at least if things continue as they are. I do not have regular contact with a gynaecologist - last time I saw one was ten years ago when I had a hysterectomy. I used to see a doctor fairly regularly in England because of chronic asthma, but again, never spoke to her about menopause.
I haven't consulted anyone mainly because I haven't felt the need to do so, but also I am unwilling to expose myself to the sort of pressure you mention.

Hi Ladies

I have hot flushes (flashes you call them) periodically but don't take any medication and don't intend to. After a hot flush, I then feel extra cold for a while. I've had a lot of success coping with them by adjusting my lifestyle. I feel very well and know I am lucky to be so and I don't consider the hot flushes to be anything more than a minor nuisance. They were worse a year ago, than they are now.

I recommend: Keeping as cool as possible by wearing natural fibres such as cotton, etc.
I sleep nude unless its very cold.
Keeping bedclothes to the minimum - just enough to stay warm enough to sleep without becoming over heated.
Dressing in layers so that outer layers can come off quickly if necessary and then go on again just as speedily.
I agree tiredness and stress will aggravate them so its time to take care of yourself.
Exercise and losing excess weight are all very helpful.

I find that if I keep my hot flushes to a minimum by paying attention to these things, then my days and nights are pretty flush free.

It's wonderful for the women who can get through the process without hormonal supplements and I think most women do not need them. It has not been my experience with doctors (internists or ob/gyns) that they pushed hormones on me, just the opposite. When I asked about HRT, I was given written information, and told it was better if I could get through menopause without it. However, I know women who have been told they need it even when they had no problems at all. There does not seem to be any consistency among doctors in this regard.

I have dealt with hot flashes for years in the same manner as Joan H who posted above. All those things help a lot. I would add one thing: FANS - I keep them all over the house. But after 5 years of hot flashes that did nothing but get worse, I am using hormones in tiny doses. It makes the hot flashes less intense and less frequent; not gone, but bearable.

What kind of small dosage hormones are you taking, HRT or just progesterone? I was thinking the same..............maybe a very small dose of HRT. Thanks Lou

I think I have read just about everything on the net about HRT!! Having read www.rxmixer.com/hormone3.html I am seriously considering taking natural progesterone only - apparently progesterone is a building block from which the body can make estrogen. I am perimenopausal and have had a go at taking HRT twice to relieve unpleasant symptoms but both times stopped due to bloating and weight gain. Am seeing my gynae on 15 jan to discuss options. Has anyone tried Crinone 4% progesterone vaginal gel?

Pretty much taking nothing, here. Asian women experience meno symptoms at a far lesse degree of severity than US women (only 10% of Japanese women report having symptoms worth mentioning, according to one study I read.) Diet and cultural mores apparently play a large part in this. Ditto women in many other cultures, actually.

I eat well, get plenty of exercise and try not to dwell on things or whine about it. I refuse to be manipulated by the pharmaceutical and supplement mega-industries that menopause is a medical condition needing all sorts of "treatment." Pooie on them.

And my SO is a doctor and backs me 100%. I'll get a bone scan in a few years and continue to get annual checkups. But until I have an ACTUAL medical condition that clearly warrants intervention, I'll steer clear of HRT & stuff.
