Lies and Realtionships

I just have never had any luck with having a "normal sexual relationship" I am not even sure I'd know one if I had one. People have all kinds of "hang ups": whether they have desires to "try" something the one doesn't approve of or looking at porn that causes a distortion in their expectations of what they expect in someone physically. Or the relationship is a struggle between one person wanting to have sex and the other person wanting someone to make love to them. It's all a hassle and I think a lot of times that is why when we share ourselves so intimately with another person we expect some degree of love and caring. Then you mix in the stuff they don't want to share with you like expectations and what they Really want and what they'd really rather have physically and...you have a lie.

Which like I said can maintain a few months-then the truths start spilling out.

Now that is why I think people have "open marriages." They know -it's going to happen-either mentally or physically or both-so may as well just save the lies and pain and do it with everyone knowing what's up. I've never had this type of relationship and don't plan to. The reason is I am just determined to not be so emotionally involved with someone that it matters. I plan to get and stay single and whatever will just be whatever not forever.

Straycat, I'm not sure there is such a thing as "normal". But I think you're right, most people are lying. Whether it's because they are scared they won't get what they want or will be judged, or it's because they don't really know what they want.

I don't think it's necessarily different in open relationships, just that people think they won't get all they want from just one person. While I don't want to be in an open relationship I can see how it happens. Personally, I think if someone wants to be with more than one person, they should. But I don't think marriage should be in the equation.

If a person doesn't like/trust/know another person well enough to say "I'd like it if you'd ....." they probably aren't ready to be intimate with that person. Until a person is willing to do for another person what it takes to make them satisfied and comfortable they shouldn't get married.

I agree...but I see a lot of people who are married, and years later find out their spouse was a totally different person in the company of others compared to when they were together.
I wonder if a lot of us wouldn't be surprised if we could "hide and watch" -really kind of scary.
I lived in a small town for years while my children were small and everyone did know everyone and most were related. But even in a situation like that there are surprises...for instance I was shocked to read one of the ministers whom I thought I knew well (and his family)and looked up to was arrested while attending a conference in a nearby town for soliciting a prostitute. If that wasn't bad enough...it was the second time!
I guess we have to trust we know people but it sure is disappointing when we find out we don't.

How sad and ugly that something which should be such a bonding experience (child taking over the torch for parent's business), especially at this time with Dad having cancer, should turn into basically a hostile takeover... It may be too late (depending on the personalities involved & communication skills), but I'm wondering if Dad can have a one-on-one heart-to-heart with his son, simply asking him what has happened (in son's perception) to create such a competitive and exploitative relationship between the two of them. If Dad can convey that it is safe for son to share his real thoughts and feelings without Dad's judgement, invalidation or rejection, it just might get to the core of the matter, be a real learning/healing experience for both of them and begin a process of a better relationship. Then again, it might not. Son may simply have hardened into a selfish person who just wants to browbeat Dad and doesn't want to compromise. Or Dad may be too defensive or otherwise have some blockage to hearing what son may have to say and reject him. Maybe it's nobody's fault but the situation is just one that isn't easily fixed (often the case in post-divorce/blended family circumstances). In any event, now that Dad is up to working again, tools that are his property should be given back, period. Before I'd call the cops, though, if I were Dad I'd at least tell son with civility: "Look, I'm back in business and I need my tools. When will you have them to me?" and if son indicates he's not planning on returning them, Dad can THEN say: "How would you like to work this out, then, with me getting my tools back? Would you rather buy me brand new tools with the big profits you've made? Or would you rather spend the money on court costs if I have to sue my own son for them? Maybe I can take the cost of them out of your inheritance, if I still feel like leaving you one. Your choice, I'm trying to be fair and give you options but you're not going to be able to just take my tools from me."

The time that he gets is court ordered. When the first went to court, he only had supervised visitation because the mother claimed that he did not have a solid relationship with the youngest, who was still an infant at the time. He has had this order for sometime now. He tried to get them on Tuesday's and Wednesday's (his days off) but she fought it saying the Wednesday's were her only day off to do things with them. I agree he needs to go back for more time. And he is a great father when he is with them, and he will go and see them after work a few times a week as well. And no, he is not a druggie or any criminal issues what so ever, just like me. Neither of us have done a drug a day in our life. The BM doesn't do what she does because she thinks I'm taking away their dad from the kids, she does it because she thinks I'm what took him from her and that if I wasn't around that they would be together. She is the type of person that believes that you stay with the person you have kids with forever, no matter what. My boyfriend left her because she was overly jealous and controlling. She would go through his phone, emails and cause issues with his female customer's(he is a tattoo artist)and that isn't even close to all of it. She basically takes the cake when it comes to psycho. And she refuses to realize that the way she was is what caused them to separate not me. And believe me, we hate that the oldest has to lie but she kind of took it upon herself because she loves me. They both always ask their dad when I'm going to get home and run to me when I walk through the door. The oldest has realized that if she tells her mom that she is around me that she wont get to be around me anymore. And there have been times where she wanted to play with me and hang out with me and we told her no because mommy gets mad. She doesn't like that. What is funny is that after reading a lot of what you said I got defensive. And it made me feel better, so thank you for that. I love my boyfriend and as bad as I want a kid, he is what matters the most to me. And as a step-child, that whole "second-family" thing that people call it...I'm the first to say is crap. Every child is family regardless if they are step or half...both my bio parents had kids with the people they married, it doesn't mean that the other kid is replaced, it just means the kid has another person to grow-up with and love.

"Apparently this is not uncommon with latin women" As a latina, I take offense to that generalization. From your post, would it be correct to assume guy is latino too? It sounds like a big mess that I'd go running as fast as I could in the opposite direction. 1) he doesn't tell you he has a child until he knew you were in love & hooked? 2) he let you do all the work while he stayed in the background? 3) he is married through an immigration scam? 4) he has major issues with immigration and family law? 5) he won't go see his child unless you are there? Is it about seeing his child or showing his ex he has you? or is he too much of a wuss to go alone? 6) he waited until his daughter was 2 years old & then put her through a paternity test? What if she had not been his biologically? Would he have bailed on her? Are you married to him? If not, run, run, run!!! He's already proven he is not honest, faithful, mature, trustworthy, or responsible. You are suffering in anxiety and stress over HIS mess! My suggestion is get as far from him as possible before you have a child with him and cause another child the kind of grief he is already causing his daughter. I could tell you about all the latin men in my family but then that would be generalizing but let me just say that I married a white guy for good reason! There is something about machismo with the guys in my family.

I know when you're right in the midst of it, every day must seem like an eternity, but really, the fact that your DH is willing to go to counseling with you suggests that he wants your family to work out and be happy. Yes, I got that the affair was with his ex. Ouch and ouch again! But, I will say (and not to excuse it AT ALL, I would have been a BANSHEE if my DH did that!!) that when people are in the divorce process, things are messy, messy, messy. And despite all the best advice to not get involved with a recently divorced person, and to not get involved with a new romance when you are recently divorced...the heart sometimes makes these choices for us! And even when the new partners are head over heels, there are sometimes these tendrils from the old relationship that cling...especially when there are kids. I would ask--does your DH seem like he knows that what he did was hurtful to you? Has he learned by the outcome of the lies? Again, not to excuse his deceitfulness, but sometimes people panic and say what they WISH was true, hoping not to hurt the person they love. I think when you guys go to the counselor, that you should lay it on the line really early that you are worried about how the relationship between your son and your husband will affect your little boy. You said your husband admitted that he never built a relationship with your son. The fact that he admits it is good--he is capable of looking at the problem. The sad fact is, that happens! Especially when the bioparent is racked with guilt. The question is, does your DH feel bad about that? Is he motivated to improve the environment that your little boy lives in? Can the counselor help him see the effect his closed-off heart is having on a little person who looks up to him? I've seen a lot of families where things don't "jell" until an "ours" baby comes along. That might make a huge difference...all of a sudden, your DH will be related by blood connection to your son through his new child. Of course, you will want to make it clear that your son will NOT be the odd man out in the family! That this will not be acceptable in any shape, size or form. Hopefully the counselor can help you get some communication going on that. And hopefully you have a good sense of your own power in the dynamic...that you can compromise, but that doesn't equal sucking up treatment that you think is wrong. Eggshells belong in the compost heap. I really am a strong believer in stepfamilies...but the birth pains can be intense. To an extent I experienced some of what you are going through; it broke my heart at first that my DH didn't love my kids as much as he loved his own. Even though if I was honest with myself, I was the same way! But through the years of us consciously trying to do what was best for the kids, barriers of genetics fell, and like a broken bone, our family is stronger for the growing. Gradually, my DH became the "softy" with my kids, and they are all very devoted to each other now. Wishing the best for you and your little guy and SKs and the new little family member on the way.

It takes a lot of courage to be totally honest with someone we love.
To reveal our true selves, flaws and all, and simply be the person we really are.
To resist the urge to whitewash, conceal flaws, and tell those little white lies.
To trust that the person we love will love us just the same, warts and all...
But it can be done, and the rewards are so worth it.

Try it. Ease into it a bit by gently stating your honest preferences, even when you know your partner will probably disagree. If he/she truly loves you, you will have gained something valuable; if they don't, what you risk losing isn't something you can't afford to do without.

It is worth it but...it's not something you can do by yourself. Look at some of the other post-they tell the story. I think that is why so many people are "suprised" when they find out their mate is having an affair, and that's not ever about what "you " did or didn't do-it's about that person's lack of self-esteem.
So just because you are trying your best doesn't mean it's going to work!

Being yourself absolutely IS something you can do by yourself.
Now granted, your partner has to accept who you are --
and accepting who you are is no guarantee they won't have an affair.

It's just more of an assurance that there's honesty and respect at the core of the relationship,
which heads off a lot of dumb little reasons many people end up having affairs.

I agree we should "be ourselves," and feel confident about being ourselves. Affairs are never about whether or not a partner or spouse has excepted the other partner. They are about the cheating spouse having a self esteem problem.
It's not all that unusual for someone to find out years later that the person they thought they knew doesn't even exist. Any one who doesn't realize that the "honesty" and "respect" they feel they have in their relationship is a "hope" not a fact isn't being real.
