2nd Marriage

I am entering another relationship and thinking of a 2nd marriage. However, I don't know how 2nd marriages work (?) Do people just have a wedding just like any other weddings (with wedding dresses and tuxedos, flowers and bridesmates?) Or would that be too much if that's how I want it to be?? The man I love (my ex-boyfriend) has never been married yet and I was married once with a child of my own.

I have seen many people in a second marriage have regular weddings(especially if it is the 1st marriage for one of the two). With my dh and I we had a medium sized wedding with flowers, church, dresses, tuxes, etc. It was his 2nd, and my 1st. But his first marriage was when he was very young and it was a court house situation.

You can do anything you want to nowadays..

It sounds like maybe you didn't get your big fancy wedding the first time around and are hoping for it this time???? You also don't mention your age. I think you can get by with a lot more if you are younger than older.

If I ever got married again, (although I'm probably older than you and already had a big fancy wedding) I would keep my second wedding as small as possible unless my fiance really had his heart set on a big wedding. The only problem I could think of that you could run into with having a smaller wedding is dealing with his mother who may be hoping for a big party to 'pay' back all her friend's invitations.

The reason I personally would vote for a smaller wedding the second time around isn't because of the expense, but big weddings are just so very time consuming and IMHO there's just not time to really focus on each other and to really appreciate the vow of marriage itself. So, I would actually find a smaller wedding more intimate and romantic. Hindsight is 20/20.

Then again, do what makes you and your finace happy. It's your day. No one is really going to care what you do or don't do. Go all out and make it the best day of your life -- whatever that means for you!

Well thanks to some of you for your strong disbelief in my dilemna. A quick check of my profile, which I have seen you folks boast about in other posts, would have shown that I have been a member since 2001. I have not been a participant much on the Gardenweb forums (namely tractors, lawnmowers & tool shed) as I now am a moderator of my own OPE forum & need to focus there. Guess you folks aren't used to a man posting with proper grammar, sentence structure and emoting in a clear, concise manner. I attempted to keep the content brief, and in doing so, left out a few things. My wife suffers from general anxiety disorder (GAD) and she has a problem being behind the wheel of a car. She can drive very short distances of about 5-10 minutes before she has a panic attack. She did NOT have sex with the other man but there was heavy kissing & petting. The "sex meeting" was to be a sexual rendezvous with my female friend. Yes, I have analyzed this to the ground. The reason being that I do love my wife and wanted to try to sort things out. I could have taken the easy way out and just left her behind but chose not to. Our marriage counselor & her psychologist have helped immensely but I still struggle with love/hate at times. Many other issues came to light that were underlying and not talked about until recently. I am guilty of doing a few things wrong and am in the process of working on them to BOTH my & my wife's satisfaction. She has also recognized (by association with ME in her position) that things need to change with her activities and behaviors. The latter was a huge step in her seeing what was done by her actions. To sum up, we're working on our relationship and it has actually been pretty good lately. There has been a steady amount of concern, affection, love, touching on a regular basis. I almost feel like I have a new love, which in fact I really do. If things go sour again, I'm out though and she knows it. Saving the best for last, I wish to convey a huge THANK YOU for those who took the time to respond and provide some thought provoking insights. Its appreciated!

M Enjoyed your post too, congrats on navigating thru all these years and coming out on top!!! However, I have to disagree with no. 2 on your list..That if the Sks don't want it to work, it wont....Solid marriage here in spite of one of mine, and one of his disapproving...I think its because both of us are in charge of our lives, not our kids...I always remember the poster here who said "There may be problems around us, but not between us"..We are in it for the long haul, with or without their approval...Again, congrats on a happy success story!!!!

When I got married, my mother told me, "I hope you two stay married forever, but if you don't, just remember -- the number of marriages is up to you; the number of weddings is ONE." ;-) I agree; one big, traditional wedding is plenty -- irrespective of who pays, and especially if the first wedding was not a zillion years ago. If you had a huge dress and a group of attendants once, I wouldn't do it again -- I'd have a small event or a destination wedding. The problem here, though, is that it would be HIS first wedding. If he or his family really, really wants a big wedding, I would do it. You can still avoid looking like you are "playing bride" again by not having lots of attendants -- having your child(ren) only is perfect -- and not wearing a traditional wedding gown and veil this time. Just wear a smashing dress and carry flowers. In other words -- you can do it up big a second time if you want to, but make it a different KIND of big. Know what I mean? But I agree with the other posters -- if you are just starting this relationship, talking about weddings so soon is probably a good way to make sure there won't BE one!

My son that is 21, left our home before we got married. He came to us last night and now says he is ready to follow our rules. He's had that opportunity since he was 18 and thumbed his nose at it. He felt like he was an "adult" because he had an 18th birthday and was legally an adult. He turned down his chance to go to culinary school because he told my dad he wanted to "do it on his own" and he didn't. His problem has been his attitude and he had to go find out, through the school of hard knocks, that it wasn't what he thought to be 18. We've helped him get decent (manual labor) jobs and even co signed a car to help him out. He quit the job because he didn't like it and stopped paying on the car when it got hit & damaged (totaled), he says while it was parked. My younger son, perhaps realized by seeing what his brother was doing, decided to abide by the rules and go to college. He is doing better, as he also went out and got a part time job and is making payments on his first car too. My daughter is doing much better in school and also working. My kids are doing much better since I got married and I can't say that it's because I got married, they were already 16-17 when I married him. But, I can say that before I was married, they did struggle more. In fact, my daughter was at one point failing in school and was clinically depressed. She began cutting when she was put on anti depressants so that was stopped. My now 18 year old son, became addicted to prescription painkillers when he was 16 and was hospitalized. These things were happening around the time I met my husband and my daughter has told me that it's different now. Before, when I was a single parent, they had a lot more freedom because I was working and not always home to enforce the rules so there was inconsistency. My husband moved in when we were planning our wedding and initially, there was rebellion, but all of the children were a part of our ceremony. We even included vows to each other's children. Over time, all the kids are doing better than they were before(except now his daughter is having problems) My step daughter is having problems for a completely different reason. Her mom abandoned her three months ago. and she is actually doing much better the past month. She's had problems with school because her mom was doing homework for her last year (when she didn't get it) and we sit down with her and help her understand it. Her teacher commented on her progress at her conference two weeks ago. At the beginning of the year (when her mom left) she was having behavioral problems and couldn't do her work because she didn't understand it or know the terminology. Her mom has continued to keep her on an emotional roller coaster by telling her that she wants her to go live over there but that she can't because it's only a one bedroom house. She never calls to say she loves her or goodnight. SD calls and BM never answers her phone, so SD has to leave messages that BM doesn't return. In fact, we just got another call from BM that she can't pick up SD from school today (she's supposed to get her from school on Fridays) but will try to be here by 9:30 PM (and they have a 2 1/2 hour drive back to where she lives) The last time she said she would be here in the evening like that, we were ready and waiting and she called and said she'd be here in the morning. She was late then too. SD does much better when we have a two week stretch without her visiting her mom because she does have the stability of her routine and schedule. She is with DH on the last weekend of each month so we have that two weeks and lately, she's bounced back from her mom's BS better. I think she's realizing that her mom can't be counted on. It may be different if she had a stable mom, but she doesn't. and no, I don't wish her mom would go away or not exist, I wish her mom would stop hurting her daughters. She also abandoned her 12 year old when she left.

I think it's up to you to have the type of wedding you and your fiance want. However, when it's a second wedding, you should expect to pay for it yourselves (especially if your parents paid for the first). Of course, if others offer to chip in, that's great. It's your day Have fun.

I am 29. Had been through a disastrous 1st wedding and marriage that I can never forget. It was a very nice wedding where I planned everything almost from A-Z in 3 months.... Until my parents-in-law and their kids came to insult me and my family at the wedding ceremony because their son came to live with me in my state. My ex-husb supported them. The wedding photos that we took on that day were never treasured by my ex-husb (they stayed deteriorated in their original envelopes) and the wedding video was never picked up. I managed to put some photos in a wedding album and enlarged a couple others and framed them but saw how indifferent my ex-husb was - my heart just dropped and I never did anything to the rest (since he didn't care about them either). I long to get married to a man I love who loves me enough to treasure our moments together. I guess the wedding does not have to be so big but I'd like to have a wedding photo frame where I can actually put on our bedroom's dresser so we can both smile at each others everyday we see it before we go to bed. My 1st wedding was all paid by me - neither my parents nor his paid for it.

Don't let my personal tastes sway your wedding size. If you want a bigger wedding, with all the flowers, big gown, and all your friends present... go for it. I hope you get to experience with your new husband what you couldn't with your last one. Everyone should have good memories of their dream wedding, and of course a great picture of it to look at everyday day!

8 years ago I planned exactly the wedding I wanted for my second marriage. My husband had lots of ideas about it as well and we worked together on it. I didn't wear a white wedding dress. I can tell you there are plenty of designer dresses suitable for a wedding that come in any and all colors--mine was a low cut gold lace gown. We had a garden wedding complete with flower girls and bridesmaids. We each had grown daughters who were the bridesmaids.
I adore my husband but I don't know about the wedding photos on the dresser--we have cuter photos of each other taken on trips to either Yosemite or some exotic spot.
I know couples who spent a lot of money on videos and photos of the wedding who are happily married and never look at the photos. So my brother took our photos and we splurged on a trip that was memorable for both of us.

Or about a second wedding?

There's a big, big difference, and having been through it before, you know that.
Make sure you keep your focus on the marriage, because that's the important part.

I agree with Sweeby. You can do it simply and it is still lovely. You do have to resist all the vendors who want you to have a wedding that rivals Princess Diana's in cost and scope. Set a budget and do it whatever way you want. Lots of the stuff can be skipped--we didn't have favors and did our own invitations on the computer. We splurged on really good champagne,food & music and served it in our own garden. We were able to have a party the night before the wedding for family and out of town guests. But I went to the flower wholesale district and bought tons of flowers and we made the bouquets and floral stuff ahead. So you decide how much money you want to spend and decide what you want to spend it on. There really isn't a right or wrong way to do it. If you are concerned somebody will be critical--don't invite them.

I went to one wedding where everyone was dressed cowboy style. It was really a cute idea and they served BBQ and baked beans, etc. The guests were told they could dress cowboy style or casual. Somebody taught line dancing at the reception. Actually it was one of the best weddings I went to.

We went to Vegas and got married there !! It was a lot of fun and it was us two and our son (mine from a first marriage but really ours since my husband has been in his life since he was 2 and he calls him Daddy). He was 5 years old and gave me away !! This year we are celebrating our 6th wedding anniversary (together almost 10). We had a wonderful time, the hotels have child care for special times and there are lots of things to do for kids, believe it or not !!

My coleague had a wedding on halloween, guests were supposed to be dressed up in costumes and everything was decorated halloween style. definitelly not somehting people will easily forget. i don't know if I will ever remarry but if I will, i will do something fun
