Going from a Happy Moment to a Sad one.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post here. I am married to a wonderful man and we just found out we are pregnant with out first child. Shortly after finding out, my mother-in-law was admitted to the hospital for having a stroke. Now, my mother-in-law's health is and has been very poor for a long time. While at home, my husband got a call from his sister stating that we need to be at the hospital Monday morning because his mother's doctor wanted to talk to us. They are saying she only has about 3 months to live. I am trying to hold strong for my husband and my in laws but I keep getting upset because I know that my children will never know their grandmother. I would love advice on how to handle the stress of this and the stress of being pregnant at the same time and also some advice on how i can tell my child when they are born and grow up about there grandmother.

Well Kelli, life sure is a roller coaster for you at this time.

I would say to you look for the "honey".

I have struggled through a lot of sadness in my life and I can honestly say, that saying that little mantra to myself has helped me a great deal.

It has allowed me to focus on the good things, which are there in any situation - it just takes great skill in finding them. And lets face it, we are very capable women who can hold our heads high and deal with life and death, and come out of it all with joy in our hearts.

I know you mother-in-law being ill is really horrible, but you have a gift - the little baby growing inside of you and that will bring you so much sunshine and joy.

When my mother died -- in amongst the sadness of loosing her, I saw my children (they were 5 and 10) at the time, as these wonderful joyous beings, who brought sunshine into my life. I realized that they were the future and my purpose was to look after them and guide them into adulthood.

Your children will learn about their grandmother through your husbands family stories, and they will be good times.

But - really- children have this great capacity to live in the moment and they are quite self centred so they will survive without a grand mother.

You place now, is to be supportive of your husband and his family - but you can focus on your future with your baby at the same time.

I think I have prattled on too much !

Prayers for you.

I know this is a stressful time, but you have to make sure you are taking care of yourself. Stay healthy, exercise and eat right. Very important for you and your baby.

Second, it is sad, but be sure to talk to your mother in law and ask the things, and say the things that you won't be able to talk about later on when she's gone. You will cherish those memories forever, and you should consider it a blessing that you have the opportunity to say goodbye. While it's not easy, some people don't have that opportunity. Cherish it, and when the time comes it will bring you peace and give you the closure that you need. And write down all those things that you talked about and share that journal with your children when they are old enough to understand.

Wow, thanks, you all! I posted again just to give the SAMA link to deedee :) liz, I had *no* visual art background in terms of actually making it -- I'm a longtime student of history of art and appreciator of art, but my talents lie more in music and words than visual art. I can't draw to save my life (my DD disagrees but she's my DD :)). I'm really happy that you say she has a cat expression (and that you noticed the ear hairs, littledog :) -- I always love those when I see them in domestic cats)-- it was a composite portrait, as I indicated, and I worked and reworked it so much. I won't feel that it's really delivered until I know whether Terri noticed her, etc...it's fine if she didn't, I just want to know one way or the other, iykwim. And I'm serious about the links; there are so many wonderful mosaic artists in this country, and they're extremely generous about sharing their knowledge and encouraging each other on, even wrt beginners. Very different from the professional worlds of music and theatre I was in, in that regard. I'm just glad that gardenweb led me, however indirectly, to find something I really love and with any luck can keep doing for a while to come (a trigger thumb operation would help, but I've got to save up for that)...

Happy Birthday to you Glenda and to PJR. I think he showed good common sense in seeking guidance with his decision for a future. It's a sign of maturity. So many times young people who don't find fulfillment in college just bounce around aimlessly. Seems that PJR has his head in the right place and has a good support system. He'll make you prouder, I'm sure he already makes you proud.

That is beautiful! If you don't mind, can I ask if you used the low iron (starfire?) glass for your shower door or the regular glass? Our bathroom is basically done (except for painting, which is probably going to take me a month at the rate I am going!)....except for the last big decision which is the shower door. It's just a door (the rest of the shower is enclosed by walls) so you'd think it would be easy but there's so many choices. I like the way yours looks and doesn't seem to have a greenish tint....so I was wondering if you could tell me which type of glass it was. Thanks!

Thanks to all of you for responding. I did find a gasket that goes to it today at the local hardware store when I took back the one that wasn't right. Dave, it is a canner, not a pressure cooker. I bought it around 1974 and it specified canner on the box as well as the manual and had canning recipes. The thingy on the top technically is not a gauge like I said, but the 5-1-15 weight as morz8 said. I canned so many pints of green beans, tomatoes, chili, etc. in it, but stored it when my mother passed her 22 qt. Presto down to me. Now this 8 qt. Mirro is more practical for me. If I can get some canning tomatoes tomorrow, I will do up some tomatoes and okra. Got a number today to get a bushel of canning tomatoes for $10 so that is on the agenda for tomorrow along with a lot of other stuff. Please fill me in on battering and freezing the okra. My freezer is packed, but I'm planning on taking out some fruit tomorrow and making jam so I'll have room for the fried okra which I love. Oh, and I'm doing pretty good for an old lady and surprised at the things I'm learning to do myself like getting the hood of my 1996 Ford F150 that was stuck shut to open with no help, and knowing how to put the battery charger on the John Deere battery. Someone finally showed me where it was located. Don't know if I'll be able to get the hood back on after it's charged, but.... Oh, and I'm still working on getting the tailgate on the truck down. All pleasant challenges that I chuckle over. Annie, I didn't like okra originally because it was slimy. I only had it boiled. However, my first husband was from Virginia and introduced me to fried okra and I loved it. After marrying my second husband, I discovered how good it tasted to me in soups. I'm hooked. Haven't tried the pickled, but will shortly. By the way, I've gotten 5 eggs out of my hens this past week which has been their first week of laying. I'm so happy. Doesn't take much to make me happy. A friend sent me a post on Facebook this past week showing omelet makings (uncooked) mixed, put in canning jars and frozen. I'm considering.... No I'm not. I don't want to have to buy a second freezer for just one person. Madonna
