The never-ending adjustment of the thermostat

Okay, after 36 years of marriage, you would think a couple would have all the arguing over with by now. This would be a minor argument if it didn't happen everytime it's time to turn on the air conditioner. DH says I freeze him to death. What he likes to keep the thermostat set at would probably be 77-78 and I'm uncomfortable at 78 when it's hot in the house. At 76, he is way too cold and he said tonight I was giving him a sore throat from him being too cold - set at 76. He even put a jacket on last week and we live in Georgia. This is not a cold climate area.

We are like two little kids turning the thermostat up and down. I think he is being insensitive to me, but likewise, I don't want to be insensitive to him. Somehow there has to be a compromise. Anyone else have this problem?

It's an ongoing series of compromises at my house too. I can't sleep if it is up around 80. My wife will have 2 blankets and a comforter on even when the temp is in the mid 70's. Our compromise is to go with whatever is the least expensive. In the winter, the house rarely goes above 72. In summer, it rarely get below 78. At least we are both happy about lower utility bills. :)

Bill, a lower heating bill is nice but if you don't get a good night's sleep and you wake up sweating in the middle of the night, it's a no-win situation, LOL!

If your home heating/air conditioning system is central (a central furnace or boiler) and you have many ducts or pipes going through all rooms (starting from the furnace/boiler) you should be having low voltage thermostat in your home.Now when you look at the backside of your thermostat, if you see 6 or more wires (thin, multi colored) in its back (going into a board) you can confirm you have a low voltage thermostat. A line voltage thermostat is used only with single stage heating systems (like forced fan heaters or baseboard heaters) and their will be only either 2 wires or 4 wires coming out of its back. These wires will be thick (as they carry higher current & voltage) and often will be in a combination of Black & Red or Black & White color. Well, this is the most important classification when it comes to types of thermostats. In fact, there are only two types of thermostats – either low voltage or line voltage. The other classification (based on features) which brings in Smart Thermostats, Programmable, Non Programmable etc. applies to both line voltage and low voltage thermostats. Smart Thermostats are available for both low voltage & line voltage categories. Similarly, programmable & non programmable thermostats are also available in both categories. So lets see which all are the best models available for both categories and how they differ.

It sounds to me like you aren't looking to adjust the thermostat so much as what the dial is indicating. It that is correct, then I think the following DCS-specific quote from the linked thread could be of help: I don't see (or just can't find) anything in my book about the oven being non-adjustable, so you may want to call DCS to check on this for your range. It does talk about adjusting the air shutter on the oven burner, but no mention of this procedure for recalibrating the oven. DCS tech support were very friendly and helpful for me. Also, are you still under warranty? They will send out a technician to do this for you. I was under warranty at the time but they didn't realize it until they'd spilled the beans about the fix! Easier than a service call I thought, but you could have this and the air shutter checked at the same time. Here's what they told me to do: Remove the oven knob. Inside the stem is a screw; using a tiny screwdriver, turn the screw 1/16" clockwise = -25 degrees counterclockwise = +25 degrees The screw is covered with putty and was a challenge to remove, and the DCS guy said not to worry about replacing it. After a little trial and error you should be able to get your oven temp to where you want it. I grew up in a house which had a single pipe steam radiators, but my knowledge in limited. My understanding is the variable vent allows you to control the speed of which the radiator will become hot from one end to the other. The idea is a big radiator has more air which must be evacuated versus a small radiator. The variable vent allows you to have all the radiators heat up at the same time. I am not sure how effective this will be with your situation. The valve is easy to install so you may want to try this. I have no experience with the thermostatic valves. I saw a This Old House video where Rich Trethewey installed one on a radiator. Have you tried turning off the radiators in the rooms which are too warm? You may get enough heat from the surrounding rooms and piping. Do you have a smaller radiator in another part of the house which you can swap with the radiators in the warm rooms? This is a way of balancing the heat distribution. Radiator covers will also block some about of heat. They usually are custom made and expensive, but it is something to consider.

Our son, the oldest, choose to join the Army reserves. Which meant he'd be back home once basic and advanced training was over in a little over four months. The plan was he'd live at home and go to college locally. As was the plan for our daughter in three years from then. At the time we lived in the city and there were three major universities and many other smaller colleges to choose from. We decided if our grown children were going to be living at home while going to college it was time to build the home in the country my hubby had awlays wanted in the Victorian style I'd always wanted. Each of them having their own bathroom and walk in closet. They helped us build it too. We'd always done things as a family so this too was enjoyable. Before our home was finished, our son was deployed to Iraq and our daughter felt the need to serve our country and joined the Air Force leaving two months after we moved in. So we never really went through the part of what to do with the kids rooms since the rooms they grew up in no longer existed. Well they did, but we no longer lived there. I felt awful that they didn't have their rooms, let alone their home, to come home to. When our son came home on leave just three weeks after his sister left for basic, I told him how sorry I was how this all turned out. He said any place that we (his Dad and I) were "was home". Our daughter said exactly the same thing when we went down to see her graduate from basic training. Neither of them even cared if they had a room filled with their stuff as long and we were there. I guess that makes sense. Concidering our pastor used to tell us how he'd never seen a family of four take up so little space on a pew as we did. I sure do miss those family hugs each night though. Our son is now married and has a son of his own living about a half an hour or so away. Our daughter has a little more than a year to go of the six years she signed up for. If she doesn't re-inlist. She's stationed in Cali and calls me every morning when she gets back to her apartment after she works her night shift and often on her three days off a week. Our son keeps bringing things home to store where our daughter says to throw her stuff all away. "If I haven't missed it by now, I don't need it." Mom however can't part with it yet. It's in rubbermaid containers in the basement so not causing any problem and I really don't have time to go through it anyway. When we really take over the basement for our wood work shop then I'll have to go through it and see what to keep, what to pass on to family members that could use it and donate the rest. ~Becky

I also live in GA. We are the opposite. I am cold-natured, worse since I reached my late 30's (why, I don't know -- thought I was supposed to get hot flashes), and DH is always hot.

I add an afghan to my side of the bed and sleep in warmer nighties. He sleeps very light, and folds the covers back and runs the ceiling fan in addition to the A/C.

We keep it at a happy medium... set at 77Â°, which is comfortable for us both as long as we dress appropriately.

Example: my dad ALWAYS complains that he's hot when he comes to visit. But even in the summer he wears pants and sometimes even long sleeves. So we don't feel too sorry for him LOL

But I feel like I have no reason to complain about being chilly if I am not dressed warmly. DH the same, he changes into shorts and a tank when he gets home.

And in the winter, I do not overheat the house. We set it in the winter at around 73-74, and we both seem to be comfortable.

Now the CAR is another story!!! LOL

I live in Louisiana and it's pretty hot here also. Dh and i are always fussing about how cold i have the house. He likes it at 77 and i like it at 74, so when he's home i usually in my bedroom with the fan on so i'm not hot.lol.

I think temperature is just one of those things men and women will never agree upon. DH is always hot and I'm always cold. But I have to admit that I like it REALLY hot, over 80. But he is uncomfortable at anything above 70. I just dress warmer. He can only take off so much clothing to get cool, but I can always add more to stay warm.

I'm lucky because in my house, we have separate offices and I keep my green iguanas and ball python in my office. So that room has to be about 85 degrees and very humid during the day, down to about 75 at night. So at least during the day i have a comfortable retreat. DH keeps his office much cooler and has a fan in there too. Lately we've been opening the windows because it's been surprisingly cool and pleasant here in NC, but I don't expect that to last much longer. He may think it's ridiculous for me to wear lightweight jeans and long sleeves when it's 95 degrees outside, but I always remind him I could wear shorts and t-shirts if he let me open the windows. That usually shuts him up :)

A tad off the subject but the posts really made me laugh. They brought back two memories from our first year of marriage. First summer, so darn hot hubby kept turning the fan up thinking that would help me out. Problem was he is so much bigger, most of the time he was blocking the breeze! Our apartment didn't allow for moving the fan readily. First winter, we had an electric blanket with dual thermostats. I kept turning mine up because I was cold. Hubby kept turning his down because it was too hot. And of course the thermostats were reversed. Thanks for bringing back the memory and the laugh we got out of it.
