Are any of you without children (by choice)?
Comments (86)I hear so many stories about parents who pressure their kids for grandchildren. Am I the only one who was actively discouraged by their parents from having kids? When I was 20, one morning my dad stormed into my room and flew into one of his tantrums, told me he didn't want me to ever have kids and would disown any child I had. My mom didn't seem to care one way or the other, but at least didn't pressure me to remain childless. I actually wanted to have kids at only 18 or 19 when i was in my early teens. I remember my gf from my junior year in college and imagining a future with the two of us together at home by the fireplace with our two rug rats. She would be the only woman I would ever have that thought about; by the time I left school I decided I would never have kids, and have only become more unwavering in that stance in the years since. Having to take care of young children would have reminded me of too many things I didn't want to be reminded about. I did contemplate being a foster parent, taking in someone at about 13, but circumstances didn't work out to allow that. I don't regret in the slightest not having kids. I occasionally hear from women who initially didn't want kids but found themselves reconsidering in their late 30s or early 40s. Something about biological clocks, or biological time bombs maybe. I almost never hear this from men; there seems to be a widespread misconception that men can become fathers into old age. Sometimes they can, but there are all sorts of things that can happen that will rule out that possibility. Treatment for an enlarged prostate left me infertile by my early 40s. Despite staunchly wanting not to have children, it somehow still irks me a bit that I ultimately couldn't make that choice myself....See MoreChildless, not by choice.
Comments (2)Just wanted to say, I'm childless not by choice, but because I didn't ovulate properly. I would have probably had to have taken fertility drugs to get pregnant. By time I found this out I was in my mid 30's and really didn't want to start a family then. I began peri-menopause at 38. Sometimes I wonder what will happen to my husband and I when we get old and he said the state would put us in a nursing home just like our kids would if we had any. It isn't the worst thing. And in this day and time, when I believe Jesus is coming soon, but probably not before things get worse (like Sept. llth and Anthrax) it is better not to have little ones, the Bible says that. We have 5 cats instead, all inside, so I am kept plenty busy. They are much like children. With adult step-children you may one day have step-grandchildren. Don't worry to much about it. I do have that lonesome, empty feeling sometimes until I hear some child screaming in the store "Mommy, I want that.", and there is no relief unless the toy is bought or the kid leaves the store....See MoreSingle & Childless
Comments (18)Here is what happens when you don't meet the right person and you are 50...absolutely nothing....life goes on. This is my own personal experience. I only mentioned this because life sometimes deals you a bad hand. I am very glad to hear Carrie may have found someone. Some people get very depressed and others get over it. My sister had it both ways and loves being single. She is almost 50, no kids, no crisis. A personal crisis is created when you measure yourself against what you THINK is societies norm. Well I have found that similar groups of people in society find one another. About 90% of my friends and neighbors that I associate with are single, childless and are about 50. They never found the right person. Some of them had their moments of depression but got through it. Another "for instance" is that they are all non-smokers. Obviously that was no accident but you get my point. If you dwell on a bad situation, it can eat you alive. When you find a relationship that you thought would work out but ends up blowing up on you...the operative word to meditate on is: "NEXT"!...See Morewhat would be your choice of a couple of feebies from crops?
Comments (3)Hmmmmm...I always liked getting a free strip of stickers or a die cut that would go on the pages I was working on that night! My CMC also used to give out as "prizes" things like pencil sharpeners, CM mugs filled with chocolates.. Another good thing at her crops was that she always has little dishes of JuJubes or jellybeans at the tables to munch on in between the coffee breaks as no one wants people eating and drinking around your layouts!! but those little goodies to just pop in your mouth are great to have. ~Mar~...See Morephyllis_philodendron
