Old Boyfriend

Have any of you ever ran into an old boyfriend and thought "Boy, I dodged a bullet with that one?". I have recently talked to "my first love" (I was 13, so maybe it was puppy love), and I actually thanked my husband for just being my husband! ( He knew the guy from when we were kids, so he knew exactly what I was thanking him for!).

I had often wondered (usually after a talk show first love reunion show) what it would be like to run into this guy again. Well, now I know.

Have any of you "dodged a bullet" so to speak?

Well, I see many of my ex's. They all live around here and some are related or know my fiance'. It's been odd but I've talked to 2 of them and we've gotten passed what ever it was and we can talk and be okay around one another. The other one still acts like he's something and he has to avoid me. Really we weren't boyfriend or girlfriend we were just talking and I went to his house once and he came to mind. He ditched me for my friend and that was that. The weirdest moment had to be when I first started dating my fiance'. He plays mens slow-pitch softball in the spring and summer. I'm sitting at the field watching him and he's in left field with two of my ex's standing in left center and right center! LOL I guess we're weird, though. His one ex girlfriend called here once and asked us to go out with her and her sister who was in town and my fiance' is friends with. Awkward things seem to happen with us all the time but we know it is long over with the ex's and it doesn't bother us. Sure does lead to interesting stories though! LOL

And yes, I know why I'm not with them or why it didn't work. My first boyfriend even commented on how much better my life is now and what I have~my fiance' and our son.

I've been there - seen them & gotten news on them both. I remember being devastated. I got news that made me think of the song "I thank God for unanswered prayers!"

I have one of the same breed. She is 19 and moved back home after leaving her husband of 2 years about 5 months ago. She has my grandson that will be 2 in January 2011. Same here. I have been screamed at, cursed and threatened in my own home until I am sick of it. She started seeing someone immediately after leaving her husband who was much less than desirable. I was unable to drive for a while due to illness. Every night after putting the baby to bed she was out the door until the wee hours of the morning and on the weekends when the baby was with his daddy, she came home only to shower and leave again, which I saw as a blessing. Things are constantly going missing the most valuable being a stainless steel watch, a gift from the president of my company. My home is in constant uproar. Do not ask her the simplest of questions or it leads to a 30 minute screaming fest. Do not ask her to clean up after herself and the baby in any place other than the room they sleep in. My kitchen is a disaster. The cabinets where my dishes belong are empty and the same goes for my glasses and silverware. I have not slept in my own bed in over a week because I have chosen to work and then leave and stay with a friend. This morning she woke up cursing and screaming at the top of her lungs to one of her friends about what a b*&!h I am for asking why she had taken something out of the fridge and hadn't put it back. When she first came back home she was my daughter. I have no idea who she is now. I have managed to get her back with her husband and for the last week she has been going to be gone every time she throws a fit. She keeps my grandson in the bedroom most of the day. He can't be eating a healthy diet even though there is a full pantry here. She worked for me 2 days a week until I realized that all of the money she was making was going in the pocket of the boyfriend. She is paying nothing to live here. She would get paid on Friday and couldn't put gas in her car on Monday. I also found out that the "boyfriend" was drug addicted and had a 21 count felony record at the age of 27. With her personality change, I cannot help but believe that my clean and healthy daughter got involved herself. There are times that I just cry because my grandson is treated so harshly and there are times that I confront her because I just can't stand her mouth any longer. I was threatened with calling the police this morning to get me under control. My next step was a call to the captain of my local PD. I too have been drained. I feel it more everyday. The 19 year old girl who sleeps in my daughter's old room is now a stranger to me and I want her out of my home. I to worry constantly about the treatment of my grandson. I have come to the conclusion that hopefully with the husband being back in her life that he can control the situation better. I know that beautiful baby boy is the center of his world as he should be. My beau is very adamant that he will not tolerate her abusive attitude toward me and has offered to handle the situation of he is ever here when it blows up. I cherish the days of peace and tranquility in my home and long for their return as quickly as possible. They are making arrangements to move into an apartment locally with some friends of theirs. I know in my heart the the arrangement won't last because of my daughter's mouth and abusive attitude. I never thought I would feel this way about one of my children as much as I love the 4 of them, but she has successfully managed to put the words, "I want her out of my house", on my lips and in my heart. I will be changing the locks on my house and there will not be an open door a second time I can assure you of that. I went through more than enough struggle and stress to raise the 4 of them as a single parent. I have given 33 years of my life away to taking care of them and providing a 2 income household on one salary. She is the youngest of the 4. My son's have grown into wonderful men, husbands and fathers. I had only wished as much for my daughter. I really do not believe God will think harshly of me for standing my ground in this and taking the rest of my life back to have peace for myself. I pray all is well with you and yours. Colleenoz - I am confused...you said "Since, as you admit, you had affairs yourself in response to what you felt were your wife's affairs.." I went back and re-read the OP's original, and follow-up posts several times, and am not seeing this at all. Can you explain where you got this? Was there a deleted post or something? What am I missing here?? OP - I know I am chiming in late here....but I have to ask why only the "first" affair seems of any importance to you? I was in a marriage where my (now) ex wife cheated on me twice, and let me tell you they both were punches in the gut. Why the fixation on the first one? I know the common (and probably correct) answer is if your marriage is good now and you want to be with her, then there's nothing to be gained by bringing it up. But, I do understand where you are coming from. After my wife's first affair, when we had [supposedly] agreed to stay in the marriage and work on things and all that, when it became clear that she just wanted to sweep it under the rug and never talk about it again, I felt that it was like I was letting her "get away" with it or something. Hard to explain. I guess I felt that she had betrayed me in such a bad way that she should have at least been made to own up to it, discuss it, etc. Not that it would have helped, I get that, just that it did leave me with a feeling of she got off easy, and it was hard to deal with. Then she did it again and that was it....one time, I could try to understand and forgive, not two.

Hi Rogue - Since I'm not there, and I don't know either of you, I don't feel competant to tell you either what's going on with your fiancee or what you should do (sorry!). However, there's one line in your post that I can give you some feedback on: "I feel hurt, but I don't feel like it is justified. I want her to tell me whatever is on her mind. When she does, I never let on that it upsets me" Rogue, your feelings are your feelings - and therefore they're valid. They may not make sense to someone else, but feelings are neither right nor wrong to have...they just are. Your hurt is valid, and I encourage you to see if you can do a little digging inside yourself to see if you can put more specific words around the hurt you're feeling (e.g. Are you afraid of losing her? Do you feel your love isn't being returned?, etc.). Pretending your hurt doesn't matter isn't going to bring healing, it will only drive the hurt down farther inside, usually to come roaring back at a later occasion. It's OK to feel hurt by this. You say that you encourage her to tell you what's going on for her - that's great! What a gift to her to let her know she can be fully herself and that she can trust you. But then you say that when she says something that hurts you, you don't let her know what's going on for you. I wonder why that is... Healthy communication needs to be honest, trusting and mutual. While I'm guessing that it may feel to you like you're sparing your fiancee from the discomfort of knowing you're hurt by things she's said, it doesn't foster mutual, honest sharing between the two of you. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that communication can be hard sometimes - but stuffing your own feelings for the sake of someone else usually just leads us to feel resentment toward them farther down the road. This doesn't sound like it's a small issue for you...I hope this might be an opportunity for the two of you to grow in honesty and to know each other's hearts more deeply.

beginner's eye, "...your assuming the person apologizes and accepts your apology. what if they don't. is that the fault of the parent as well..." I'm going to take....fault of the parent out of this equation and provide another example here. Perhaps a non-apology was given. I have an older sister, who I'm estranged from. She was given to periodic calls out of the blue. Usually, she would rage at me, criticize, judge, etc. Sadly, she just could never connect to my feelings. The point is that it was all about her and her feelings. I got used to her negative judgments and criticisms. She was very aggressive, although I'm convinced that she never saw herself as an aggressive person. She always framed me as the problem. Once, at the urging of some therapy group she decided to make another call. By this time I equated all phone calls and every interaction with her as emotionally painful. As charastic of her, she demanded to know why I avoided her. My sister could never, never see how hurtful her behavior was. EVER! Then she said to me, "...If I apologize, will it make things better?" This took me by surprise and there was a long history of her emotional outbursts, anger and denial. I responded saying I guess so. Then she got mad. Then immediately after she made another very telling comment, she said,"I DON'T GET ANY OF THIS." I was in therapy at the time and discussed her non-apology with my therapist and why I felt it was insincere--it was a very telling comment to me. She was apologizing for behavior that she didn't UNDERSTAND, because as she said, "She didn't get any of this." Neither could the rest of my family and the rage, anger and blame continued from them. My response was to distance myself even further. The concept here is that if someone truly doesn't understand how hurtful and destructive their behavior is (and will not own it and don't understand it), then I'm certain that the behavior will continue and there will be repetition. This may not be the best example, but think of a wife-beater who abuses his wife, then profusely apologizes with flowers, gifts and she reconciles. Then he beats her again, even more cruely than the first time. Then her well-meaning friends or relatives say, "she allowed herself to be manipulated, abused," or they may encourage her to "forgive and forget". Plenty of people MINIMIZE emotional abuse and the damage it creates, because unlike physical abuse you can't see it, therefore if you can't see it, it must not exist. I can assure you my estrangement from my sister is NOT TO PUNISH her. It is 100% about PROTECTING MYSELF and PROTECTING my emotions. It is not because I do not want "...resolution/reconciliation/closure/healing". Of course, I want that. I also want change and I want her destructive behaviors to STOP. I want her to demonstrate AWARENESS and I want to be convinced that she UNDERSTANDS why she is apologizing. I'm not interested in prolonging the conflict. I'M NOT INTERESTED IN PROLONGING EMOTIONAL ABUSE with someone who DOESN'T UNDERSTAND my feelings. I am also not looking for perfection of character. Responsibility and awareness, YES. That is what I am looking for. My intest is in preserving some sense of myself and protecting myself. I posted on another thread about the Art of Apologizing.

It has gone both ways for me. My DH and one of my ex's are really good friends and because of me. That is just weird for me. Then there has been a few that I think they have gotten better looking with age. Then there are a few that still haven't grown up and I think whew got out of that at a good time.

We never mention our exes anymore. It's like an unspoken word - when we're talking about the "pre marriage" part of our relationship and those people, it's just assumed. I told my husband that if we hadn't met I would have been divorced by now (if I had married my old boyfriend). I still have friends who keep me updated, for some reason, on what he's doing. It's as if these people feel compelled to fill me in when I would rather not hear. I ran into my ex's brother in Walmart once and found out that he (the brother) and his wife got married the same day we did. Whenever I go home to visit I can't keep from running into a member of their family or hearing about them in some far out, bizarre coincendence. Thank God my husband is never around! It's very odd.

my bullet moved across the street from me (laughing) i dont know how or what this means, in a way i do. I saw a person walk by my window and i said no that cant be, so i went outside and called his name and sure enough it was him, of course when i told my husband he was really upset that i went outside to talk to him because he knows i was in love with this person. When he told me, after not seeing him for over a yr, that he moved across the street from me i was stunned, so i quickly told him i was married (laughing again )the ironic thing is my husband recently told me that he seen my ex outside and they talked (i was like what is really going on)when i asked how did you know it was him, because he never seen him before, he said my ex seen the dog that me and him bought together, and he started calling the dogs name and asked my husband was the dogs name spanky, and my husband said yeah, who are you , and my ex told him and they started talking. This is really wild and i'm thanking GOD that im moving soon to NC, if he shows up there i'm going on AMERICA'S MOST WANTED, cause it would be obvious the man wants me back (laughing again)

Hey rosewood, welcome to NC! Where ya going? I'm in Durham, work in Carrboro, school in Raleigh- yeah I use the whole dang Triangle!

I moved to NC with my husband too! We ran into my old boyfriend when we were visiting MD. DH knew old bf because we all hung out together (that was a slightly awkward time). His wife turned out to be gay, I swear I'm not making this up, and they obviously parted ways. He didn't seem all that happy, the breakup was still pretty fresh, but I'm sure he's OK. He doesn't hang out with our MD friends any more though, so I haven't heard anything since that chance meeting.

Honestly, there is nobody that I'd be happier with than my husband. He's the love of my life. No comparison at all.

Boy did I dodge a bullet! My ex-boyfriend still lives with his parents (he is 34!) and works part time installing cable. He still has the truck from high school because he can't afford anything else.
I married a wonderful man that loves me to pieces!

Hey Meghane, thanks for the welcome to NC, i'm still looking at some different areas. Thanks to some of the people on here i have found some really nice areas, kings mountain,dallas,concord area. I'm putting my house on the market in march here in maryland, so it should sell fairly quickly. Meghane my husband told me don't think because i ran into your old boyfriend that we are going to start hanging out because i don't care for him. Then he had the nerve to say and i don't want to come home and see him sitting in the living room. I told him that I hope he wasn't to nice to my ex when he met him because if he was trust me he will be knocking at the door. I can't wait to move to another state too many old boyfriends here and that's not good with a husband around now.(laughing)

I just had to post this, I know after it's read there will be alot of laughter. I just posted about a ex boyfriend that my husband met just by chance walking the dog, well some years before that I was involved with another young man in my city and we broke up because he just kept lying about little things and he really didn't have any ambition or goals for his life so i decided that wasn't the type of man i wanted in my life.
Ok here goes, my husband went to this place recently called labor ready to pick up a few guys to help him move our furniture into storage. Would you believe that one of the men that he hired was the ex boyfriend mentioned above? When my husband returned home with the 3 men and I saw my ex I almost fell on the floor. I said to myself 2 ex's in one month what the hell else can possibly happen! I just laughed and went in my bedroom and closed the door.
After they completed the work my husband asked how i knew one of the men and I said somehow you are managing to attract all my ex boyfriends back to me. We laughed for hours and we both said at the same time thank GOD we are moving.
