Advice for dealing with boring Super Bowl party?

No, I can't get out of it, it's at DH's family and I have to go. Other than eating for many hours, is there any way to survive this? No interest in football, whatsoever.

If you do any handcrafts, like crocheting, knitting, or patchwork, it is an ideal way to make up for the boredom while yet seeming to be there with the family. You have my entire sympathy. I have always been glad that DH is neither athletic nor interested in being a spectator!

I go to parties almost every year and have never had any real interest in the game. Aren't there other people or even kids there to talk to? The food makes it for me; I really don't care that I don't like football... as long as there's good food and friends, it's a party!

I agree with Jen. The jersey thing is no different than spending money on anything else one enjoys. The only jersey I would probably buy is a baseball jersey because it's the only sport one can actually afford to go to around here. Can't get tickets to a Giants game and even if I could, no way could I afford it. Rangers and Knicks are almost the same. Can get tickets but they are crazy expensive. We do try to go to a baseball game or two each season. Baseball is our favorite, DS plays serious competitive youth baseball, and it's relatively affordable. We even travel to Baltimore at least once to go to an Orioles game. I do buy DS jerseys, but I buy them at Marshalls or places like that and they are not crazy expensive. I love when I leave my office in midtown Manhattan on a night when the NY Rangers are at the Garden. It's amazing how many people I see walking towards the Garden wearing Ranger jerseys. Not sure why, but don't see Knick jerseys when they are playing. And basketball is way more popular than hockey. I went to a college that has football team (Rutgers Univ). I went to all the games when I was in college. And I still live within 20 minutes of my college. And I'm a huge sports fan. But, I just cannot get into college football and never could once I left college. I'm not sure why. Maybe because we have so many pro teams in this area. Or maybe because the players change so often (only there for 4 years max) I don't feel the connection. I did recently go to a Princeton Univ hockey game for the 1st time. My DS has been asking to go to a hockey game for years. Can't afford Ranger tickets. Well, I could afford the seats way up, but I've sat there for Ranger games and there's no way I would take a kid there. It's crazy! Anyway, it was AWESOME. Will definitely be doing that again very soon.

Superbowl is not the big deal here, that it is in the States. Annie- I agree about Mick... and Steven Tyler and Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney. You guys are billionaires - hang it up already! That being said, I am going to try the following recipe from Bon Appetit and like a lot of the reviews, I will sub coconut milk for the milk in the recipe. Jane Fragrant Beef Curry with Rice yield: Makes 6 servings Bon Appetit ingredients 2 pounds well-trimmed boneless beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 large onions, sliced 6 whole cloves 2 large garlic cloves, chopped 2 cinnamon sticks 1 bay leaf 1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper 1 1/2 cups whole milk 3 large tomatoes, quartered 3 tablespoons Major Grey chutney 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger 1 1/2 tablespoons curry powder 1/2 teaspoon salt Hot cooked rice preparation Sprinkle beef with salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in heavy large pot over high heat. Working in batches, add beef to pot and brown on all sides, about 7 minutes per batch. Using slotted spoon, transfer to plate. Heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil in same pot over medium-high heat. Add onions; saute until tender and brown, about 7 minutes. Return beef to pot. Our friend is making a classic spinach dip. Another is bringing dessert of some sort. I'm bringing the munchies: cheeses, bread, crackers, summer sausage and beef/turkey meatballs in mushroom sauce (no pork, as one person is Muslim). All of us love cheeses but seldom get to indulge in an all-out cheese tasting so I sprang for some of our favs: Cypress Grove's honey chevre and Humboldt Fog; Marin French's triple creme brie, Cowgirl Creamery's Mt. Tam, Bellweather's Carmody and Jasper Hills Cabot Cheddar. Bread is fresh-baked today from a good local bakery, smells wonderful. Crackers are from a little company some Midwesterners might be familiar with: Potters Crackers from Madison, WI. They recently established a Sacramento CA office and have been making inroads into the restaurant industry. We encountered their Caramelized Onion Crisps, which come in both a flatbread and baguette style, and liked them a lot. A touch of sweetness from Blenheim Apricot jam from a wonderful little artisanal local company called WeLoveJam. It's a couple that fell into preserve-making when they bought a property that contained remnants of one of the last remaining Blenheim orchards left in Silicon Valley. That's right, Apple, Google, Facebook, Oracle, et.al. are all built on what used to be some of the most fertile fruit orchards in the U.S. They make the least-sweet jam we've ever tried, and offer several unusual varieties such as Elephant Ear Plum (tastes like cherries!) and feijoa (tasting like a stupendous cross between pear, apple, pineapple, and super-fragrant lime). I buy a mixed case from them every year, but we love the apricot best and have turned several people into big fans. We're rooting for Denver, since our hostess is from there and loves Peyton Manning. Hard to see how they can beat Carolina, though. But at least we'll have a good time together, LOL.

Lulu This is the recipe for the Asian rib marinade. IMO It doesn't make enough for marinading a slab of ribs and to have enough left over for basting so I double it. Use half to marinade for 1-2 hours. Cook at 375F for 1 hour and baste with the marinade every 20 minutes. After 1 hour baste again and then put under broiler for 5 minutes. A broiling pan lined with foil works best IME but you can also use a sheet pan. The recipe is from The Chinese Takeout Cookbook by Diana Kuan. 3 lb. ribs cut into individual bones 3 Tbls honey 2 Tbls Chinese rice wine 2 Tbls ketchup 1 Tbls hoisin sauce 1 Tbls soy sauce 1 tsp seseme oil 2 Tbls minced garlic 1/2 tsp Chinese five-spice There are some similar recipes on the Woks of Life website.

I'm always struggling with my weight, so this is many hours of pure temptation. It's two hours there and two back so that is also something I'm not looking forward to. The rest of of DH's family all live close together and know each other well, so I can only make small talk. That really palls after three or four hours.

Yeah, I wouldn't like that much driving in one day either... But, The Super Bowl is one of those days a year that you should forget your diet and just live it up with the food! If there are enough women (or guys) that don't watch the game, maybe you guys could play cards or an adult board game.

Another idea, (if you're not the one driving), why don't you have a few drinks. Conversations tend to flow a lot easier with the in-laws when you've got a couple beers (or some wine) in you. Hey, you asked for suggestions...

For sports parties and the likes that I'm not very into I've learned to use mental planning. Looks like I'm watching, but in reality I'm thinking about a project I'm doing at home or just planning one, planning the weeks food menu, day dreaming etc. Could you try something like that?

Another thing that gets me a little interested in the game is if there is a pool going on. Now, of course, I'm not going to suggest gambling money... but you could still have a pool going on for something else or have one of those number boards things where everyone gets a square or two ...if your points match the points of the game you win. Believe it or not, I think I won last year... it had me watching the game at least at the end to make sure the points didn't change. Am I making any sense???????

If you have some kind of stake in the game.. you're more prone to get exciting watching it... even if you don't like football. By the way, who is playing, who's expected to win... and is there anything else I should know so I don't look like a total ****))) at the party?

It was on tv here - in Sydney - can't believe it ! Maybe there are enough US people here to watch it - but I can't follow what's going on ! There was an Aussie playing in it, I believe.
