Fresh air unit malfunctoned, flashing light and alarm.

Spent extra $ to have this installed.
Have had problems with it flashing and sounding alarm for a few years now.
Unit is just over 4 yrs. old now.
Shut it to off so the alarm would quit.
Was never told how this works.
Ck'd the roof top vent unit and all is well, no debris etc..
Any one with knowledge of these units, could you please advise?
I had someone tell me these can go out every 2-3 yrs at a replacement cost of up to $500 each occurrence!
Is it worth fixing or should I get it disconnected?
