Repairing and painting vinyl walls

So, I'm moving back into my house after moving out for a year.
I want to paint the walls, but first need to repair a wall in my bathroom. My Husband took a large picture down off the wall and took some of the vinyl wallpaper with it. So now you can see the ugly, brown "cardboard" looking material.
Would this be an easy fix or am I looking at purchasing wallpaper, because I won't be able to paint that wall?
