Just be sure that the LED is compatible with the motion sensor. I have not seen any manufacturers guarantee that their LED will work with motion sensors and timers.

i put a Philips AmbientLED in there for now, so far so good.

Most timers and motion sensors use a triac to turn the circuit on and off.
This is the same device used in a conventional dimmer, and distorts the voltage wave supplied.
It can burn out any device that cannot deal with the distorted waveform (some burn out faster than others).
