Recessed cans in living room -help!

Hi - looking for some advise. We have a 25 by 13.5 foot living room with a 9 foot fireplace on the longest wall wih an entrance from hallway. Opposite wall has centered opening to a den. Ceiling is about 8 ft high with three beams running the width of the room. Thinking of can lights to highlight wall pictures, fireplace and center of the room. That would be about 12. Seems too much? And should I go with the adjustable light bulbs inside can or gimbal style flush with trim??? Thanks for your suggestions!

The number depends on how bright you want the place to be and the output per lamp.
The following link should be helpful, although it focuses on the kitchen area. The main principles apply.
