is it true that swithing a light on and off causes the bulb to burn out faster than leaving it burn?

someone said to leave holiday string lights burn because plugging and unplugging would burn the string out faster?
sounds wrong to me as a bulb has a "life"

yes it is true. but for CHRISTMAS LIGHTS the majority of failures are bad shunts or broken strands, and these are easily repaired.
