Help! new lighting in 1984 house

We have replaced several ceiling lights, but the new ones seem to fit differently than the old, leaving a slight gap between the top of the fixture (completely tightened) and the ceiling. Does anyone have a solution for this gap?

When I've encountered the same, I've loosened the light base, marked the ceiling low points with post-it sheets and carefully filled in the areas with spackle using a clean spackle blade. We're only talking about one-eighth of an inch of filler here, right? Make sure the spackle is thoroughly dry before fully fastening the light to the ceiling. The metal base of the ceiling light should not be place atop damp spackle (or damp paint). The white spackle filler on a white ceiling shouldn't have to be painted -- it'll be barely visible.
