3-Way Bulb for Floor Lamp - worked then didn't

I bought a floor lamp that takes a 3-way bulb. Before I was done with the full lamp assembly, I put in a 3-way Incandescent bulb (50-100-150) and it worked great. I then took the bulb out, finished lamp assembly and put the bulb back in and it now only lights up once, not 3-ways. I then thought maybe the assembly instructions says something about what bulb to use (duh!). The instructions said to use a "100W maximum 3-Way Incandescent A Type bulb."
I took a Type A bulb (50-70-100) out of a lamp where the bulb is working correctly and tried it in the new lamp and it only worked once. I put the bulb back in my old lamp and it continues to work as it should in that lamp (3 ways).

Questions

Did I blow' something because I used a bulb that went over 100W?

Do I simply need to get the socket rewired or what?

Thank you.
