Spacing celing cans

I've got a 15x18 family room with a brick fireplace that covers 36 ins x 108ins starting in one of the corners and going down the 18ft side.

I'm want to replace the floor lamps (uplighters) with cans. But how do I figure out the correct size for the can and watts as well as the spacing between each can?

TIA

RE: Spacing celing cans

6" cans are probably the cheapest option for recessed cans.

You should measure light output - lux or lumens instead of the wattage since different lighting types - halogen, incandescent consume more electricity than CFLs and LED.
