Need advice in the kitchen, it's keeping me up at night

Hi everyone, I need some advice from everyone. I have scoured the site as

much as possible however I wanted to reach out to you. Here's the situation:

Current State: Our kitchen is not very big and we have 8"

ceilings. Kitchen has 1 surface mounted light over sink and 1 large flourscent

light in the middle of the kitchen. With the lights on I find that I still have

tons of dark areas and have to turn on the dining room lights when needing more

lights. Very inefficient.

Proposed State: I have purchased about 8 of the Cree CR6 lights

in hopes of installing them in the kitchen. I first wanted to start with the

light over the sink however upon closer inspection I cannot put the light above

the sink centered due to studs being in the way.

Above the sink: I considered the Cree LR4 however the sheer

cost of $300+ and finding a suitable retrofit can is rather daunting, thus I

will either have to put 2 - 4" halogen lights or 1 - pendant light above the

sink. Since we have very short ceilings my wife really only wants a pendant to

hang about 1 1/2 feet from the ceiling to the bottom of the fixture.

Kitchen lighting: One of the problem areas that

made us decide to change the lighting is since the flourscent light is placed at

the center of the room, when we work on the counters we are always in the dark.

Thus I have placed cans as shown with 2 additional cans centered above the

counter that has no cabinets.

Questions:

  • What are your thoughts with the 6" can placement?

  • What are your thoughts with 2 - 4" Halogen lights?

  • If I go with Halogen lights, what bulb might be best suited to match the

    Cree CR6 LED temperature etc?

  • If I put in Halogen 4" lights, what brand? Halo? Also when and if Cree

comes out with a retro fit 4" lamp like the CR6 do you think I could replace

    it with that?

By the way we are somewhat on a budget thus spending $200+ for a

pendant light I can't swing.ÃÂ I appreciate your help, this dilemma has been

keeping me up at night.
