Need kitchen light (10x10, lots of wood)

Hi what should i be looking for in a kitchen ceiling light? The room is only 10x10, with wood ceilings and cabinets, no recessed lighting. How many watts do i need? Our fixture now has solid white shade and it seems like not much light comes through even though it's 3-60 watt bulbs. What would be best plug in undercabinet lighting?
